Job Description

Lab Technician our client is a leading supplier of filtration products and services to the UK energy industry. As part of our service offering, we provide our customers with laboratory analysis and reporting. We have a small on-premises laboratory equipped to handle ourroutine analysis work. Furthermore, we also engage with other analytical service providers and universities to carry out more advanced analysis. Each piece of analysis must then be interpreted and professionally presented in a report to be distributed to ourcustomers.Typically this work has been carried out in batches by our small, in-house technical team. However, as the number of customer requests has grown, we have taken the decision to recruit a lab technician to carry out the routine analysis and reporting tasks, aswell as to liaise with our other lab service providers.Your role will be extensively supported by our technical team. You will receive full and comprehensive training of the methods and equipment required, as well as in in-depth training on filtration principles and concepts and the wider impact on our customersprocesses. With experience, you will gradually take full ownership of the laboratory space and its operation. Your ideas will be highly valued and implemented. Within your contracted hours you will also carry out duties to assist the technical team in supportof customer and research & development projects.Skills we require:

  • Comfortable using Microsoft Excel and Word to input and manipulate data and generate professional reports
  • Comfortable navigating Microsoft Windows 10 to open and manipulate files
  • A good grasp of English and the ability to write in a professional and formal style
  • Good organisational skills and an eye for detail
  • Proficiency with basic physical laboratory tasks:
    • Maintaining appropriate use of PPE as well as good laboratory practices
    • Systematically identifying, labelling and storing samples
    • Measuring liquids and solids by weight and volume
    • Basic unit conversion (mass, volume, length etc.)
    • Basic maths and geometry (e.g. Calculate the area of a circle)
    • Accurately following written procedures and methods
    • Accurately transcribing and recording measurement results
    • Preventing cross-contamination of samples
    • Cleaning, basic maintenance and calibration of equipment
    • Maintaining a stock of consumables
    • Understanding of accuracy, precision and experimental error
Desirable Experience (not essential - training will be given)Previous Experience in:
  • Any laboratory setting
  • The filtration industry
  • Manipulating large data sets in .csv format
  • Creating/using Microsoft Excel VBA Macros and Pivot tables
  • Data science, data visualisation, statistics
  • SEM-EDX, FTIR, GC-MS, TGA-MS, or other advanced analysis methods
  • Any computer programming language
Particulars:The role is offered at 20 hours per week to be taken flexibly to suit your needs, by agreement with your line manager. (this our preferred route)The minimum hours worked per working day will be 4 Hours.Working hours may be taken between 0800 and 1700 Monday - Friday.During busy periods, you may be offered additional hours by mutual agreement, based on your needs and availability.Your hourly rate of pay will be £13.20 per hour.The role holder will be entitled to Benenden healthcare and death in service insurance of X2 salary after 3 month service.Your place of work will be at our Jarrow facility. Due to the nature of the role, remote working will not be offered.We may also consider applicants looking for full time contracts or to expand to full time in due course (37.5 hours per week), depending on your experience and skills.
