Job Description

Please Note: Applicants must be authorised to work in the UKBrunswick Organic Nursery is a registered charity based in Bishopthorpe, York, which provides a productive and rewarding environment for people with learning disabilities to work in. Our aim is to build skills and confidence, support wellbeing and develop independencethrough offering opportunities in different work areas. These include woodwork, horticulture (contract gardening service for the local community, growing plants at our garden nursery and growing organic fruit and vegetables), office administration, craftsand cooking.Details of the role: You will lead small teams of people with learning disabilities who have a range of skills and abilities to create handmade wood products. You will need experience of woodworking and using a range of tools such as bandsaws, chop saws, table saws, pillar drills,sanders and a range of hand tools. You will need a strong awareness of health and safety and ideally, have experience of enabling others to learn in woodworking. The teams work on a range of products and we are keen to keep expanding this. From benches tobird boxes, seasonal decorations to soap dishes, there’s an ever expanding range. We use recycled wood primarily and are proud to produce beautiful environmentally conscious items that showcases the team’s knowledge and abilities.We’re looking for someone who can lead our Tuesday group (currently 8.30am -4.30pm) and offer further time during the week for either Relief Cover Work in woodwork or any of our other work areas; or who could provide joinery or carpentry support for oursite which has multiple wooden buildings and structures. We are open to hearing from applicants who would be interested in either of these options. We are looking for someone who can work more than one day per week - hours to be discussed.About you:You will be able to plan ahead, and to organise the materials and tools you need each day. At the same time a willingness to be flexible and to be adaptable is essential - no two days are ever the same! The successful candidate will be someone who can workindependently and also be a supportive member of the team. You will have great problem solving skills and will be able to calmly react and adapt in the moment.You will also need:
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in woodworking
  • A relevant joinery or carpentry qualification and/or demonstrable woodworking experience
  • Strong awareness of health and safety
  • The ability to motivate people with enthusiasm and a positive, friendly attitude
  • Experience in supporting people with a range of skills and abilities
  • A full driving license, able to drive in the UK, and comfortable driving larger vehicles e.g. a pick-up truck
