Job Description

We have a great opportunity to join the Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service (GLAAS) as its team leader on a 9 month Fixed Term Contract.GLAAS is a team set within our London & SE Region and is responsible for maintaining and developing the London Historic Environment Record, and for providing advice to local planning authorities and others on the sustainable management of the historic environment. It is a CIfA Registered Organisation and its team leader has responsibility for ensuring that it meets all relevant national standards.You will also ensure that the team engages where its expertise will add most to public value, and supports the wider London & SE Regional team and other colleagues in the advancement of Historic England`s corporate objectives.What you will be doing:In this role, you will be an integral member of both the London & SE Development Advice and Wider Leadership Teams, taking delegated responsibility for the delivery of group targets as they apply and liaising closely with regional colleagues to ensure that the team functions efficiently and effectively.You will also be an effective advocate for the sustainable management of the historic environment, influencing and supporting partners such as local authorities and local communities, Government agencies, sectoral partners and amenity societies. Leading and managing a team of archaeological specialists covering both the management of the Historic Environment Record and provision of planning advice, you will develop capabilities, manage workloads and ensure knowledge of and compliance with agreed practices and standards.Who we are looking for:

  • To be successful in this role, you will have broad and extensive experience of managing change to places of archaeological interest through the planning system.
  • You`ll also have a thorough knowledge of the archaeology of England, with specialist knowledge of the management of urban archaeology.
  • A good understanding of relevant Government policy, guidance and statutory procedures for the historic environment will also be essential.
  • In addition to the above, you will have demonstrable capability in performance management, constructive and creative problem-solving skills, and an ability to adapt communication styles to a variety of circumstances.
