Job Description

Publisher, Discover Series Journals (Open Access) Location: London and HeidelbergClosing date: October 26th 2020Springer Nature publishes a large portfolio of peer-reviewed open access journals across disciplines within STM (Science, Technology, and Medicine) and is launching a new Open Access portfolio, Discover Journal Series.We are looking for a talented Publisher, with journals and OA experience, to take responsibility for the commercial success, strategic development and reputation of this new Discover Series portfolio.Discover Journal Series will consist of up to 40 new titles covering hot topics from across the full range of applied science, physical, life, medical and social disciplines and the first ones, "Discover Internet of Things", "Discover Sustainability", "Discover Water" and "Discover Materials" are already available online.As Publisher, you will enjoy building new business through identifying new subject areas for potential launches, as well as maximising the efficiency and profitability of the existing portfolio, working with external Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Boards, and championing the needs of the portfolio.Using your leadership and influencing skills you will manage the portfolio to achieve business goals.   • Oversee the launch and development of the Discover journals portfolio
  • Support the Publishing Director to agree the editorial scopes of the new journal portfolio and liaise with the relevant subject Publishing Units
  • Work with Editorial Operations to agree the workflows and systems including the process and parameters for editorial decision making
  • Recruit and engage the external editors for each journal
  • Develop P&Ls for the individual journals ensuring that costs and revenues are correctly budgeted and overseen
  • Liaise with research marketing and the transfers team to assign budget and activities supporting and promoting the Discover portfolio. Find new ways to optimise successful transfers to the Discover series
  • Evolve the relationships with departments such as technology, marketing, advertising sales, supplements, production, and finance
  • Work closely with the operational team in Pune/Beijing to manage relationships with authors, reviewers and external editors
  • Drive the commissioning of Topical Collections and Review articles by working with Managing Editors and external Editors
  • Monitor the development of the OA landscape to understand which
  • journals should be launched next
  • Identify and implement peer review and other publishing innovations
  • Report regularly on the growth of the Discover portfolio including submissions, acceptances,
    • publications, transfers and turnaround timesExperienceEssential
  • Demonstrable experience in publishing within journals and OA market
  • Experience of commissioning Special Issues, Topical Collections and/or Review articles
  • Excellent communication skills, including oral and written presentation skills
  • Customer-focused
  • Strong financial skills, including experience with budgeting and P&L oversight
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Enthusiastic and committed
