Job Description

Just Like Us, the LGBT+ charity for young people, is recruiting a Head of Comms and Media in a brand new role to join this award-winning startup and lead our comms and media strategy. You will be responsible for helping to grow our profile and managing our reputation through leading our external and internal communications, including our media engagement, social media channels, public-facing campaigns and communications with our people and young ambassadors.Youll be responsible for working alongside the Chief Executive to ensure that more schools, teachers and young people than ever are aware of and connected to our work, as well as holding responsibility for our brand and externally-facing content, including social media. You will actively seek out media opportunities and develop relationships with press contacts across mainstream media outlets and the LGBT press as well as providing a final quality check on our school resources and other content. In doing so, you will build on our ongoing commitment to give a voice to the young people we serve.Just Like Us (JLU) is the LGBT+ charity for young people working for a world where LGBT+ young people live awesome lives. Our mission is to empower all young people to be the champions of LGBT+ equality at school and work. To do that, we run three programmes:School Diversity Week: our annual initiative empowers teachers and pupils across the country to tackle homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic bullying by organising activities that celebrate LGBT+ equality in education

  • Ambassador Programme: we partner with employers to train LGBT+ young adults to give talks and workshops in schools that use their own stories to champion LGBT+ equality and challenge prejudice
  • School Diversity Week: our annual initiative empowers teachers and pupils across the country to tackle homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic bullying by organising activities that celebrate LGBT+ equality in education
  • Pride Groups: a new programme training teachers to support students in establishing and running Pride Groups student-led, school-based clubs for LGBT+ students and allies

  • Won Pink News Community Group of the Year, Business Charity Award, Guardian Change Hero and Prime Ministerial Point of Light. Featured in The Guardian, The Telegraph, BBC News, ITV News, Channel Five news, PinkNews, Attitude, DIVA, and Gay Times
  • Partnered with leading companies including Facebook, J. P. Morgan and Travers Smith to provide training, mentoring and career opportunities to our young volunteers
  • Built relationships with the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and successive Secretaries of State for Education
  • The position Salary: £35,000- £40,000Pension: 6% matchedHoliday: 25 days (excl. public holidays)Reporting to: Chief ExecutiveKey responsibilities
  • Work with the Chief Executive to develop and implement our comms and media strategy, including ongoing development of the Just Like Us brand identity
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with national and regional press, tv, radio and media outlets in order to place stories and interviews for JLU
  • Manage all responses to media enquiries as well as proactively seeking opportunities to raise JLUs profile and protect its reputation
  • Identify opportunities to amplify the voices of the young people that we serve
  • Write, draft and edit news releases, blogs, case studies and other online content as well as email newsletters and other email communications
  • Manage relationships with celebrities and other notable individuals
  • Develop an annual communications and media plan, identifying and managing media and communications opportunities for Just Like and ensuring messages reach our key audiences in accordance with our annual time table and strategy
  • Line-manage our Programmes Assistant, who holds responsibility for our social media channels
  • Develop Just Like Us and our position as a "thought leader" within the sector.
  • Support the production of content, video and graphics for social media channels
  • Manage communications and brand-related risks associated with reputation and quality, leading on crisis communications projects when needed
  • Experience, skills and attributes As Head of Comms and Media at Just Like Us, youll have:
  • A genuine interest in the LGBT+ Education sector and a commitment to Just Like Us and our values
  • At least four years experience of working in a communications and/or media role, preferably within an LGBT+ or education setting
  • An ability to develop longer term strategic plans while being responsive to risks and opportunities
  • Experience managing journalists, building relationships and managing press responses
  • Experience in collating, analysing and making informed decisions using analytics (including social media)
  • Exceptional written communication skills, an eye for design and the ability to produce high-quality content for a range of audiences and channels
  • Line management and the ability to motivate others
