Job Description

Summary We are looking for a Coastal Adviser to join our internal Consultancy Service at National Trust in Northern Ireland.Working alongside property, regional and national colleagues, and external stakeholders the post holderwill advocate for improved coastalpolicy, raise awareness of coastal processes, plan for change and manage some specific coastal projects.National Trust in Northern Ireland looks after 108 miles of coast - 22% of the coastline and includes internationally renowned coastal landscapes in NI such as the Giants Causeway, Murlough Nature Reserve and much of Strangford Lough. Given the extent ofour coastal land holdings, we are well placed to provide leadership and be an advocate for better management of and access to Northern Irelands coastline. The Coastal Adviser will provide a focus for our coastal activities, raise awareness about our workand lead our advocacy for coast in Northern Ireland. The opportunity to champion coastal management, adaptation and nature recovery is an important element of our organisation-wide Land, Outdoors and Nature ambitions. What its like to work here Youll be working with passionate people and inspiring places, with the opportunity to make a difference every day.Your contractual location will be Rowallane Garden, Saintfield, however there will be an opportunity to explore and agree hybrid working arrangementswhich strike the right balance for you and National Trust. The role will also involve travel to properties or regional hubs to meet with stakeholders and to carry out work. What youll be doing We can offer an exciting role where you can make a real difference working alongside a dedicated team of multi-disciplinary consultants and experienced countryside managers.The key strands of work you will be involved with include;

  • Advocacy for updated legislation and improved policy to protect and manage our coast and plan for coastal change
  • Production of (and revision of existing) Coastal Adaptation Strategies in conjunction with Countryside Managers, using these interactions to identify areas for sequestering blue carbon and inform local stakeholder engagement
  • Provision of project management and/or technical expertise for coastal projects.
Youll have plenty of experience of partnership working, engaging and managing stakeholders and great influencing and negotiation skills as well as the ability to develop good coastal community relations. Youll have the aptitude to think strategically,while keeping on top of the detail and have strong leadership skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills will be needed and brilliant inter-personal skills will enable you to work with people from different specialisms across different channelsand situations. Youll be able to work effectively on your own and as part of a dispersed team. Who were looking for To be successful in this role youll need to have;
  • Substantial post qualification experience in delivering coastal advice and/or coastal project management.
  • Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent experience
  • Clear demonstrable knowledge to a high level of coastal management and understanding of coastal processes
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Experience of working in partnership with internal and external stakeholders and dealing with challenges and conflicts
  • Awareness of relevant coastal legislation and policy.
