Job Description

Job DescriptionTo help drive our environmental protection, climate change & sustainability goals, the SDA are seeking an experienced and motivated Environmental Manager to contribute to our newly formed Environmental Centre of Excellence (ECOE). You will work with ourCentral Environmental Management Team to deliver Environmental Management System (EMS) arrangements within our project teams, contributing significantly to deliver a sustainable and robust operating model whilst overseeing challenges unique to this industryand providing support to the Royal Navy.As a member of our ECOE, you will be responsible for managing environmental resources to support the organisation in maintaining the environmental cases that support our extensive activities and products. You will engage with the most complex environmentalprogrammes in the world, maintaining a clear focus on environmental protection. Youll support end-to-end lifecycle activities associated with nuclear submarines and the supporting infrastructure, ensuring that we manage our environmental impacts and risksappropriately and meet our stringent compliance obligations.Due to the nature of this work, working with stakeholders is critical to success. You will therefore be required to uphold strong and productive relationships and provide subject matter expert advice to SDA teams and our contractors. You will be inductedinto a hybrid working environment and occasional travel between sites may be required. Your primary place of work can be one of the following four locations:

  • MOD Abbey Wood, Filton, Bristol BS34 8JH
  • BAE Systems, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria LA14 1AF
  • HMNB Clyde, Faslane, Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute G84 0EH
  • MOD Manchester, Piccadilly Gate, Manchester M1 2WD
  • HMNB Devonport, Plymouth, Devon PL2 2BG
External and internal candidates may be entitled to relocation expenses for this position. This will depend on the outcome of an eligibility check by Defence Business Services (DBS) - Barrow-In-Furness only.Please be advised that due to the nature of security, these roles are reserved for sole UK Nationals only. Due to there being posts in multiple teams/locations, SDA reserve the right to offer the highest scoring applicant/s for each team/location respectively,subject to requirements.ResponsibilitiesBy joining the SDA, you will have defined progression routes and opportunities to prosper as a professional. Training is readily available to stay abreast of emerging technologies and you will be working in an environment that encourages development of yourrole and of your responsibilities. In this role, you will fulfil ECOE services through independent work and will also have the opportunity to:
  • Support the development and maintenance of policy and process to satisfy the DE&S corporate standards for Environmental Management.
  • Develops, manages and maintains effective Environmental Management Systems. Identifies and analyses environmental impacts and contributes to the identification and evaluation of risk reduction measures, ensuring that these are adequately documented andmanaged
  • Work with colleagues at all levels to ensure compliance with relevant UK and EU legislation and regulations, MOD regulations and DE&S Policy.
  • Ensures compliance with POEMS to ensure that the projects EMS is robust and proportionate to the level of environmental challenge.
  • Produces, reviews, endorses and recommends acceptance of environmental artefacts.
  • Oversees the management of contractual aspects to ensure environmental requirements are captured and the management of contractors who perform environmental activities.
  • Provides informed environmental advice to decision makers through Project Environmental Panels
Person specificationTo be successful with your application, youll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:
  • Extensive experience in the use of ASEMS and use of Environmental Management Tools & Processes.
  • Substantial experience in an environmental protection role and experience of developing an Environmental Management System.
  • Knowledge acquired through the recognised DE&S System Environmental suite of courses with CPD.
  • A minimum of Level 4 NQF in a relevant engineering or science discipline.
In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competencies and behaviours will be assessed at interview:

  • EFCF 2 Application of Analytical techniques Practitioner
  • Communicating and Influencing CSBC3
  • Changing and Improving CSBC3
