Job Description

About the roleThe London Fire Brigade are looking to recruit a Payroll Assistant on a 3-month interim basis. The post holder will provide support in the payment of salaries and expenses for some 7,000 salaried employees, payment of Creditors invoices, credit control forinvoices issued by the Brigade and other financial transactions. The role will include working to service standards, performing numerical calculations and liaising with other Brigade staff, external suppliers, contractors and agencies on pay or creditor matters.Key responsibilities

  • Prepare and process input data for the payroll, creditors/debtors and finance systems, ensuring work is completed accurately within the required deadlines.
  • For payroll, prepare manual payments as necessary, incorporating the correct application of Income Tax, National Insurance, Statutory Maternity Pay, Statutory Paternity Pay, Statutory Sick Pay, Incapacity Benefit, Occupational Pension Schemes and otherstatutory and non-statutory deductions.
  • Accurately check output produced by the payroll and/or creditor/debtor systems after the payment runs and distribute as appropriate.
  • Accurately check and process petty cash and purchase card claims and payments and deal with any related queries.
  • Use Microsoft Office (E.g. Outlook, Word and Excel) and other financial software as required.
Skills, knowledge, and experience
  • Experience of working in a similar role within a public sector setting
  • Experience of using a range of IT including Microsoft Office (E.g. Outlook, Word and Excel) and Finance software applications (E.g. Payroll, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable)
  • An understanding of payroll services work and the calculations required.
  • Awareness of financial controls and fraud risks in order to minimise exposure to financial loss.
  • An understanding of the need to maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive information/data and the legal requirements of the Data Protection Act/GDPR and Freedom of Information Act.
  • Local government pension scheme knowledge is desirable.
