Job Description

POST: CONSULTANT IN FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY BASE: ROWANBANK CLINIC Applications are invited for a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist to work within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHS GG&C) Directorate of Forensic Mental Health and Learning Disabilities.This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to join our service and take a full part in the ongoing development of the largest forensic service in Scotland. The post is based at Rowanbank Clinic with the majority of the role being within the medium secure women’s service. Additional sessions would cover a small remit in the male rehabilitation wards and prison clinics.This 10 session post is open to those with a Forensic Psychiatry or Learning Disability CCT.Applications for those who wish to work less than full time are also welcomed, subject to negotiation.The medium secure women’s service is based across two wards at Rowanbank Clinic (Sycamore and Elder Wards). There are 6 beds for female patients with a mental illness from NHS GG&C, as well as 4 National female LD beds. There is a full multi-disciplinary team including psychology, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, pharmacy and experienced nursing staff.In addition, the post will include up to two sessions providing visiting psychiatrist input to one or more prisons within NHS GGC (prisons in the Health Board area are HMP Barlinnie, HMP Low Moss and HMP Greenock). The clinics are delivered using a mix of ‘Near Me’ and face to face interviews, supported by the prison mental health teams.NHS GG&C forensic mental health and learning disability services are delivered across a number of sites. Rowanbank Clinic is a 74 bed medium secure unit in the grounds of Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow. In addition to the women’s service outlined above, Rowanbank provides regional medium secure care to men from across the West of Scotland region and hosts the national medium secure learning disability service. This position would include some cover to a male rehabilitation ward.Low secure forensic beds are based at Leverndale Hospital. In total this offers 53 forensic beds across 5 wards for men and women with mental illness or learning disability and forensic needs. Community services include 2 forensic community mental health teams (covering Glasgow and Clyde areas) and 1 forensic community learning disability team covering the Health Board area. The majority of out-patients are seen at the Douglas Inch Centre, West Ambulatory Care Unit, Yorkhill.Additional low secure capacity is being developed to meet high levels of demand and following the publication of the recent Independent Review into Forensic Services, it is hoped that a planned extension of medium security at Rowanbank will also now progress.On call responsibilities cover the forensic psychiatry service, as well as providing supervision to Higher trainees covering the local sheriff court diversion scheme. The duties are shared with other consultant forensic psychiatrist colleagues on an approximately 1:13 rota. Successful candidates will be encouraged to maintain or develop special interests as part of their professional and career development. This could include a specific subspecialty outpatient clinic or an academic role between the service and the university department. Each post holder will have medical secretarial support and remote access. Core and specialist trainees are also attached on placement to the forensic service and placements are also offered to undergraduate medical students as part of their psychiatry teaching. There are active education and audit programmes within the service.Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council, a licence to practice and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of Higher Specialist Training leading to a CCT in Forensic Psychiatry or Learning Disability Psychiatry, or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR); or be within six months of confirmed entry at the date of interview. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
