Job Description

Summary Rangers have been a part of the National Trust since the beginning, our place in the organisations future means that we need to think long term about how we look after our special places. As part of the wider Ranger team, we need you to think about our impacton the environment and find better ways to do things. What its like to work here Arlington is a large 2700 acre lowland estate in the heart of North Devon, that has a drive and ambition to do more for nature, people, and climate. At the heart of the estate is a house with an eclectic collection including masses of model ships, pilesof pewter and museum room of the last owners collectables. The stables now house the National Trusts Carriage Collection. The formal and kitchen gardens are set a little way from the house while the pleasure grounds merge into the Park and wider countryside.8km of the River Yeo meanders through the estate, edged by conifer and broadleaf woodland, which stretches up the steep sides of the river valley, and opens out into farmland above.You would be joining an ambitious team, who are working to break the hard lines between monocultured habitats, softening edges and creating a more mosaiced, and dynamic landscape. This includes the planting of trees, encouraging species rich grassland andtrailing techniques to slow water flows and reconnect watercourses with their floodplains.It is important that people are at the heart of what we do, so that they can share in, and benefit from the transformative nature gains that we will be making. This will cover a multitude of activities, which will require the successful candidate to have a basic level of practical land management experience, but most importantlythe desire to learn more. Tasks will be very varied and could include anything from fixing gates to tree guard building to leaky dam erection. The ideal candidate will have the ability to think on their feet and at times be self-lead.Working with and leading our volunteer groups will also be an integral part of the role. As such, we will be looking for somebody who is well organised, considerate of others, and who thrives working with and leading groups of people. You will understandthe basics of risk management and how to facilitate a safe working environment for the groups you are working with.We are a small team who work closely to deliver multiple outcomes for nature and people in proximity, therefore, excellent communication skills, a flexible and open mindset, and willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team is essentialPlease also read the full role profile, attached to this advert. Who were looking for To deliver this role successfully, youll need to:

  • Demonstrate a willingness to work alongside volunteers and be able to support them to perform at their best
  • Have a commitment to customer service standards and experience of its delivery
  • Demonstrate a passion for nature and the outdoors
  • Have good written and verbal communication skills
  • Have good people skills enabling strong relationships externally and internally, to be built and maintained
And youll need to demonstrate the following experience on your CV;
  • Practical experience in land, conservation and access management, to level 2 (or equivalent level of vocational experience)
  • Some experience of delivering engagement activities that help build or strengthen visitors connections with nature and the outdoors
  • Familiarity with machinery/equipment and practical certificates as required by the property
