Job Description

Job Title: Mechanical Design EngineerJob Type: PermanentLocation: Stoke on TrentSalary: DOEIndustry: Process MachineryPremier Engineering has engaged with a key client and a leading manufacturer of Process Machinery. Due to project and business growth an opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Engineer is available.The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following skills and attributes:

  • Designing and implementing cost-effective equipment modifications to help improve safety and reliability.
  • Developing a project specification with colleagues, often including those from other engineering disciplines.
  • Developing, testing, and evaluating theoretical designs.
  • Discussing and solving complex problems with manufacturing departments, sub-contractors, suppliers, and customers
  • Making sure a product can be made reliably and will perform consistently in specified operating environments.
  • Managing projects using engineering principles and techniques.
  • Producing details of specifications and outline designs
  • Using research, analytical, conceptual, and planning skills, particularly mathematical modelling and 2D/3D and SolidWorks computer-aided design.
  • Considering the implications of issues such as cost, safety, and time constraints.
  • Ensure materials selected in the design operation are readily available for all activities, considering the cost of procurement a major priority.
  • Ensure drawings are recorded using the company numbering system and all drawings are accessible via ‘the vault’.
  • Comply and assist the Company 5S Monthly Presentation Audit for housekeeping.
  • Liaise with customers with occasional site visits, ensuring a professional image is always portrayed.
  • Demonstrate good use of mechanical design principles and be highly competent with the use of 2D & 3D Design Software.
  • Show calculations for design related issues and the considerations taken when designing equipment.
  • Have an understanding and appreciation of Process & Instrumentation Drawings (P & IDs).
  • Evaluate and optimise concepts for mechanical function and manufacturability.
  • Will determine/ implement design approaches and parameters. Conduct feasibility studies on new designs. Will analyse equipment to establish operating data, conduct experimental tests and evaluate the results. Lead and/or participate in design and review meetings.
  • Will select components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and comply with EC standards for machinery safety.
  • Communicate with suppliers and advanced operations to resolve issues and optimise design for manufacturability and efficiency. Will ensure designs are cost efficient, optimising performance and ease of manufacture with reliability.
  • To adhere to and maintain the Company Quality policy to IS09001:2015 and to comply with all documentation and systems.
  • Continually look for ways (and report) to improve productivity and efficiency of the design process.
  • To adhere to and maintain the Company Health and Safety policy and to comply with the health and safety at Work Act 1974 and all current Health and safety legislation.
  • To attend appropriate training, as and when requested.
  • Key Skills:
  • Engineering Degree/HNC Mechanical minimum/Design Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years in machinery design or mechanical design experience in a fast paced high technology environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – able to express ideas and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Open minded- able to recognise good ideas.
  • Innovative thinker – able to envision new and better solutions.
  • Good instincts and sound judgment for mechanical and structural design.
  • Excellent analytical skills, ability to plan, organise, and implement multiple concurrent tasks. Good working knowledge of CAD/CAM/CAE computer systems, engineering materials and design, coating technologies and advanced manufacturing technologies.
