Job Description

Histopathology Specialist Practitioner The University Hospital of North Midlands, Mid Cheshire and East Cheshire NHS Trusts are working collaboratively to form a Pathology network in line with a NHSI directive.**UHNM & MCFHT EMPLOYEES ONLY**This post is advertised for current employees of UHNM AND MCFHT. Our goal is to be a world-class centre of achievement, where patients receive the highest standards of care and the best people come to learn, work and research.Our Histopathology department is looking for an experienced, competent and versatile individual with proven experience in specimen dissection. Applications are invited from HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientists with an MSc, FIBMS or equivalent, and demonstrable extensive relevant experience post HCPC registration in cellular pathology to join our dedicated, busy and friendly Histopathology department.The department has undergone significant transformation with all routine Histopathology for the County Hospital, Stafford and the Royal Stoke University Hospital, Stoke on Trent, performed on the Royal Stoke site in a dedicated PFI modern laboratory. We currently receive and process approximately 40,000 surgical histology cases per annum which results in approximately 300,000 slides being produced plus over 5500 Non Gynaecological specimens each year from which we produce over 9000 slides for microscopical examination. Histopathology work will further expand in 2021 following the agreed laboratory merger with Cheshire PathologyThe successful candidate should hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma or equivalent and appropriate qualifications recognised by the IBMS. The post is suitable for someone who is highly motivated, enthusiastic, a good team worker with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills. Application is encouraged to this innovative post in dissection and reporting from individuals with existing experience in specimen dissection who wants to further develop their dissection and microscopy skills in two specialties chosen from skin, breast and/or gastrointestinal pathology. The ability to prioritise tasks together with effective communication and a methodical and organised approach to work is essential.The post holder will be expected to currently hold or gain both the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice, Histological Dissection and the IBMS Advanced Diploma in Histological Dissection for a designated specialty. Salary will be commensurate with the level of qualifications held as detailed in the job description. It is expected that any required dissection qualifications will be completed within an agreed time frame in order to progress to (Band 7).This advanced role will include specimen dissection of category A-C specimens across all specialties. On completion of the IBMS Advanced Diploma in Histological Dissection the post holder will perform dissection of complex cancer resections in their specialist area supported by a clinical supervisor.The post holder will manage the dissection workload of their specialist area on a day-to-day basis to ensure specimens are dissected in a timely manner within departmental turnaround times. They would liaise with consultant staff and actively participate in the departmental training programmes.Working with a consultant supervisor, the post holder will be expected to input and authorise histopathology reports in their specialist areas after checking all cases with a supervising consultant, using predominantly proformas and pre-written text and including the addition of SNOMED codes. This will be combined with basic medical and microscopy training to enable the post holder to develop an understanding of diagnostic histopathology and begin to recognise straightforward entities. All reporting will be under direct consultant supervision. There will be no diagnostic responsibility associated with this role. Approximately two thirds of the post will be focused on dissection and reporting.In addition approximately 1.5 days per week will be spent on general histopathology laboratory duties.The post holder will be responsible for the production, review and implementation of SOPs, competency assessments, training documents and other documentation required for your specialist area of dissection.The Histopathology Department is UKAS ISO 15189 accredited and holds the relevant HTA license.
