Job Description

Networt Engineer 2nd Line Support - Based Staffordshire - £32-£37,000 DOEMy client is looking for a CCNA certified 2nd line support engineer to join the business.Technology Services are responsible for transforming and supporting all of the organisations digital technology needs. The operating structure is split into four core teams:

  • Strategy (responsible for identifying and selecting the right technologies)* Transformation (responsible for delivering and implementing changes to the technologies)* Operations (responsible for configuring and supporting the infrastructure and applications)* Service (responsible for supporting and servicing all end users of technology)
  • The Networks & Devices sub-team within the Operations team are responsible for the following key areas:
  • Ensuring the security, integrity, availability and performance of network and communications infrastructure in live operational use;
  • The Airwave infrastructure - including covert and overt end-user Airwave devices, Integrated Communications Control System (ICCS), Airwave fleet mapping, and Airwave coverage;
  • The data network infrastructure - including Local Area Networking, Wide Area Networking, and Wireless Networking;
  • The voice and video infrastructure - including Voice Over IP (VOIP) and Video Conferencing technology;
  • The firewall and gateway infrastructure - providing secure connectivity to the internet and other networks (e.g. PSN);
  • Installing, configuring and maintaining network infrastructure within the live environment;
  • Supporting the transition of new/changed infrastructure from development and test environments into live usage;
  • Overseeing the build, development and management of mobile phone devices;
  • Providing expert network and communication infrastructure knowledge to force projects and change initiatives as required;
  • The Network Engineers are responsible for configuring and supporting all of the network infrastructure across various vendors (Cisco, Juniper, Aruba, etc.), and technologies including SDWAN, ACI, F5 and all routing, switching and firewalls.Tasks & responsibilitys
  • Manage the security, capability, availability, and performance of the network infrastructure;
  • Manage the security, capability, availability, and performance of the firewall and gateway technology;
  • Manage relevant incident, configuration, availability, capacity, continuity and release management activities in line with the ITIL framework;
  • Provide support for all incidents and calls involving network connectivity;
  • Ensure all application or firmware releases are properly documented and are managed in line with best practice;
  • Monitor network performance and load balancing, to ensure the best possible service is delivered;
  • Plan and implement resiliency into all network design changes, and mitigate against risk of outages or degraded performance;
  • Provide specialist information and/or advice to assist and influence senior colleagues in making significant business decisions;
  • Adhere to approved change management procedures regarding planned upgrades or network changes;
  • Monitor and manage the performance of third-party suppliers;
  • Assist the architecture team in formulating strategic direction for the infrastructure estate;
  • Provide reports and comprehensive working papers including making recommendations for improvements or amendments to systems within the team;
  • Liaise closely with the wider infrastructure team to ensure applications have the necessary port/routing configurations enabled;
  • Manage network incidents and service requests to meet the needs of the force and make best used of the resources available;
  • Ensure that all security regulations and policies are adhered to, and work closely alongside the Security Engineer to enforce rules;
  • Monitoring Health and Safety issues and raise issues where appropriate;
  • Ensure adequate checks and controls are in place to monitor and protect live operational environments;
  • Ensuring best practice network security arrangements are adhered to, providing both resilience and security as suitable;
  • Maximising the performance of the network infrastructure through the intelligent configuration of SDWAN, ACI and F5;
  • Managing the WiFi estate, to ensure maximum availability across buildings with supporting security protocols and governance;
  • Supporting VPN services for external users;
  • Essential experience required:
  • Cisco CCNA certified
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent experience
  • At least 2 years working in a 2nd line network engineer role
  • Juniper Junos experience
  • Familiar with CISCO ACI
  • Firewall configuration knowledge
  • VPN security experience
