Autism Specialist Practitioner ReferencePRI38409LocationProgress School, Preston, LancashireWe are keen towelcome an Autism Specialist Practitioner into our team. We would like to hear fromapplicantsthat havea range of therapeutic, educational or clinical backgrounds.Progress School is an outstanding, highly specialist day school for children and young people with autism, our multi-disciplinary staff team provide a bespoke educational and therapeutic experience based around the individual needs, strengths and interests of each child.“Progress School is a lovely place to be. They keep pupils safe.” OfSTED March 2020.Specific responsibilities of this role willinclude:

  • Observing and interacting with pupils and offering support and advice for their staff teams
  • Planning, implementing and reviewing interventions focussing upon the individual needs of each pupil
  • Supporting and coaching members of the school team and delivering training to further enhance practice and understanding of autism
  • Contributing to assessments, compiling reports and maintaining accurate and comprehensive records
  • Preparing resources and equipment
  • Liaising with outside agencies and communicating as part of a multi-disciplinary service
  • Liaising with and supporting families and carers
  • Maintaining and developing current knowledge of evidence-based practice and disseminating this to colleagues.
  • Key skills and experience:
  • A Post Graduate Qualification in Autism
  • Experience of working in an SEND setting and/or with children and young people with autism
  • Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • A sound understanding of autism and the strengths and challenges that students with autism may face
  • A strong practice based understanding of successful strategies, approaches and therapies to support students with autism
  • Experience of working with children and young people who present complex and challenging behaviours
  • A sound understanding of the functions of behaviour and the principles of positive behaviour support in autism
  • A sound understanding of the complex, additional mental health needs of children and young people with autism
  • Related educational success at graduate level with evidence of continued professional development in autism or a related field
  • The ability to reflect and think analytically in therapeutic work and to promote learning
  • The ability and desire to work as part of a team and the ability to use initiative and work autonomously
  • Evidence of concise reporting and record keeping and a high standard of report writing.
