Job Description

Your new roleHere at National Highways we are striving for excellence so if youre looking for a new opportunity to shape a high performing team within a progressive organisation please see below!As Head of Audit and Assurance youll provide a responsive and helpful service to audit clients through a sound and professional evaluation of risk management, internal control and governance arrangements. This service will be delivered through the developmentof the annual internal audit approach and the delivery of an effective programme of assignments. You will support the Director of Corporate Assurance in their role to lead the business in improving its risk management, internal control and governance arrangements.The success of Heads of Audit is measured by their ability to lead their team to deliver independent assurance and insight to a consistently high standard and to be a catalyst for change in the business, have you got the drive, resilience and commitment weneed.What youll be leading on

  • Youll be a member of the Corporate Assurance leadership team with accountability for end-to end-delivery of the internal audit portfolio. This will include working with other heads of function within the division to ensure no gaps or duplications in assuranceactivity
  • Youll develop, manage and update the internal audit approach to drive the creation and delivery of the internal audit plan as part of a fully risk-based corporate assurance plan for approval by the Audit and Risk Committee
  • Developing and leading the internal audit team in delivering high-quality, value-adding audit assignments (from planning to final reporting stages)
  • Provide the Director of Corporate Assurance with evidence and narrative to support the companys annual assurance statement
  • Preparation of progress updates to the Director of Corporate Assurance, National Highways senior client base and beyond (as needed)
  • Act as an independent adviser and business partner, helping National Highways achieve its vision and objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to providing assurance, advice and insight on the effectiveness of risk management, governance,compliance and internal control.
To be successful
  • An experienced Audit Leader, operating at the Head of or Senior Management level. Ideally a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors (CMIIA, QIAL) or a qualified Accountant (ICAEW, ACCA or CIMA)
  • Ability to grasp the realities and complexities of the business and understand the implications of applying specialist knowledge
  • Ability to assimilate and convey complex and challenging information to a variety of audiences, including executive directors
  • Understanding of the governance and compliance processes in large and complex organisations
  • Ability to empathise with stakeholders whilst delivering difficult messages in a clear and supportive way
  • Ability to identify creative and pragmatic solutions to address risks identified
  • Strong independent mind-set and the ability to work under pressure in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment.
