Job Description

Your new roleNational Highways is looking to appoint a new Director of Health, Safety and Wellbeing to lead the organisation and continue to reduce harm and improve well-being of our 6,500 employees, approximately 45,000 people in our supply chain and the four million peoplewho use our network every day.Working within the SES Directorate support the Company by delivering standards and processes, technical advice and support, assurance to the Executive and Board and develop through a research and innovation programme new solutions and opportunities to deliveragainst our zero harm ambitions.What youll be leading on

  • Building on our Home, Safe and Well Strategy, work with the Executive Team and Board to define future strategies to deliver against our zero harm ambitions.
  • Lead the Division of up to 80 in creating operational and cultural change, encouraging and enabling innovation and continuous improvement, for our customers, employees and supply chain, ensuring an appropriate focus on the road user customer experience.
  • Set and lead the implementation of HSW policies, standards and operating procedures across National Highways and the supply chain to support the achievement of National Highways strategic and shorter-term objectives and ensure compliance with externallydefined standards or legal obligations.
  • Work with the Executive Directors to ensure that their HSW management is fit for purpose and help to facilitate their improvement activities and provide them with competent, professional advice.
  • Develop your team ensuring that they have the capability and capacity to deliver priorities and support the Company to be successful.
  • Work through the Executive and Board SafetyProvide timely, accurate and value-adding reports to the Executive, Board and across the Company which provide leading and lagging performance indicators, as well as an analysis of the reasons behind the performance.Provide a quality assurance process for establishing root causes following incidents in HE and the supply chain.
To be successful
  • Significant strategic leadership experience in a related role and sector
  • Deep understanding of transport sector health and safety issues and challenges
  • Extensive change management and transformation experience.
  • Demonstrable evidence of leading dispersed and large complex teams
  • A degree level qualified, with post-graduate degree preferred. Minimum of NEBOSH Diploma held, or an equivalent standard, that may be demonstrated via chartership of a relevant professional institution
  • Deep subject matter understanding, to demonstrate credibility on health and safety best practices.
  • Excellent relationship management and strategic influencing skills, with evidence of successful engagement with both internal and external clients and key stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to build a diverse workforce and motivate high achievement.
