Job Description

Summary As Collections & House Officer youll work with a friendly and passionate team of staff and volunteers to conserve and share the National Trusts collections.This role is based across two sites in Kent and East Sussex. The successful candidate will be at Smallhythe Place for 3 days per week and at Lamb House for 1.5 days per week.This is a short-term contract covering a secondment until 31st December 2022. What its like to work here Smallhythe Place was built in the early 16th-century when Smallhythe was a thriving shipbuilding port. It was later home to the successful Victorian actress Ellen Terry from 1899 until her death in 1928. The house was later converted into a museum curatedby Ellens daughter Edith Craig. The collection contains over 14,000 objects including theatrical costume, decorative arts, books and furniture.Click here for more information about this locationLamb House is a red-brick Georgian house in the heart of Rye. It was home to authors Henry James, E. F. Benson and Rumer Godden. The collections is comprised of objects which tell the story of these writers and their connection to Lamb House.Click here for more information about this location What youll be doing Youll be responsible for the daily opening of the house, ensuring appropriate resources are in place to be able to provide a consistently excellent service for our visitors. Youll work with colleagues and volunteers to implement preventive conservationroutines. Youll collect and record information during housekeeping routines to inform our understanding of the house and the collection. Youll work collaboratively with the Sissinghurst Portfolio Team to interpret and present the properties. Youll enjoytelling visitors about our fascinating history, sharing tales from the past as well as your personal experience of working here.This role includes Duty Management responsibilities and some weekend working. Who were looking for

  • Knowledge of customer care and approaches to optimising visitor enjoyment.
  • Good team player with day to day line management and supervisory skills.
  • Willing to learn about collections management and care
  • Willing to contribute original or imaginative ways to make elements of the collection or house that are difficult to reach accessible to all visitors.
