What its like to work here One of the National Trusts most visited places, Nymans was once a creative retreat for the artistic Messel family. The garden holds nationally significant plant collections and at its centre is the Messel family homea partial ruin. Warm and welcoming, the remaining rooms offer a charming insight to the lives of the people that once lived here. The adjoining woodland, with lake and bird hides, is a place of peace and tranquillity, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife and flowers. Read about Nymanshere: Nymans | National TrustStanden House was built between 189194 as the country home of James Beale, a successful solicitor from Birmingham, and his wife and seven children. Designed by Philip Webb, the house is one of the finest examples of Arts and Crafts workmanship, with Morris& Co. interiors creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The house and garden were intended to be seen as a whole, and were designed to complement each other. The contents of the house are rich and varied: from the abundance of Arts and Crafts interiors,to objects that give a glimpse into the lives of the Beale family. Formal gardens, an orchard and croquet lawn surround the house which is set amid the Sussex Weald. Read about Standen House & Garden here: Standen House and Garden | National TrustSheffield Park & Garden is a horticultural work of art formed through centuries of landscape design. On purchasing Sheffield Park in 1769, the First Earl of Sheffield set about remodelling the house and garden in the latest fashionable style. He broughtin architect James Wyatt to design the house (now no longer owned by the NT) and then Capability Brown followed by Humphrey Repton to work on the garden. Four lakes form the heart of the garden, with paths circulating through the glades and wooded areas surroundingthem. Each owner has left their impression, which can still be seen today in the layout of the lakes, the construction of Pulham Falls, the planting of Palm Walk and the many different tree and shrub species from around the world. The River Ouse runs acrossthe bottom of the parkland. Sheffield Park has long had associations with cricket, the first match being played here in 1845.
