Job Description

We have a fantastic opportunity for a HM Coroners Officer at Bolton Council. This is a full-time temporary role for the next 3 months, with the possibility of extension.What is the roleBolton Council are looking for a HM Coroners Officer to ensure the provision of an effective and efficient administration service to enable the coroner to fulfil his/her statutory responsibility. To liaise appropriately and sensitively with bereaved relativesat every stage of the Coronial processWhat are your responsibilities

  • Monitor reported deaths to ensure that they are dealt with efficiently, sympathetically, and expeditiously.
  • To deal with all tasks relating to inquests, including opening inquests and their continuing conduct.
  • Be responsible for the efficient conduct of inquest files, including listings, hearings and liaising with witnesses and juries.
  • Liaise appropriately and sensitively with bereaved relatives regarding the postmortem process and its outcome.
  • To deal with families, undertakers or other personal representatives of the deceased either calling into the office or over the telephone
  • Discuss, process, and accept death reports, including the completion of all relevant documents.
  • Provide advice on the legality of issuing of death certificates to doctors.
  • Receive and process postmortem results from Pathologists and present to the coroner for certification of death or to open an inquest.
  • Compile inquest files and liaise with GP’s, the Health and Safety Executive and Environmental Health Departments, the Police Service, and other agencies as and when required.
  • Liaise with the Registrar in completing and forwarding appropriate documentation.
What skills do you Need
  • Must have previous Coroners Officer / Customer Service experience.
  • Excellent people skills, as you will be speaking to the public, which will include family members, carers, and other members of staff including managers.
  • Strong IT skills, as you will be using internal systems as well as Microsoft packages including Word and excel.
  • Excellent telephone manner.
  • Full Time 37 hours a week, Monday to Friday 8.30am – 16.30pm Which will be fully Office Based
