Job DescriptionJR6087853 UK Competence Lead: Electrical System Design - Rolls-Royce Electrical Full time Derby / Bristol /Solihull/ HybridWhy Rolls Royce An exciting opportunity has arisen for a UK Competence Lead: Electrical System Design to join our growing team in Derby, Solihull (Coventry) or Bristol. Reporting into the Head of Engineering Operations UK, the successful candidate will lead and growthe UK Electrical System Design team and deliver power electronics and battery storage systems into initial production.This role requires in-depth knowledge and extensive experience in electrical system design, power electronics, energy storage systems and associated computer models.   • Lead, engage and develop team members, from both a technical and people perspective, to develop electrical systems, power stack designs and energy storage systems into initial production solutions.
  • Drive the standardisation and adoption of suitable designs & technologies for safe, high integrity, power dense systems, including a system of systems approach where required.
  • Lead arc flash hazard analysis, short circuit analysis, load flow analysis, EMC / EMI analysis, power factor correction, harmonic analysis, cable sizing, power quality, insulation coordination, switching transient analysis, stability analysis, groundingand bonding, cable design and analysis, power stack design and analysis
  • Work with global team members within the global Electrical System Design, Power Electronics and Energy Storage Design communities to share knowledge and develop common design standards, software tools and guidelines.
  • Identify new R&T opportunities and contribute to electrical research activities at our University Technology Centres in the UK and associated external research activities in the US, Norway and Singapore.

  • Minimum of a bachelors degree in Engineering with Chartered Engineer status.
  • Deep understanding of complex electrical power systems, power electronics and battery storage systems with 10 years relevant post-graduate experience in electrical power system design, preferably in the aerospace or adjacent, high-integrity industries.
  • Experience in electrical system steady-state, transient & dynamic model development and validation. Including electrical machines, power conversion, energy storage, protection devices and AC/DC distribution network behaviour.
  • Engineering software experience in electrical systems simulation and analysis tools (SPICE, MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape, etc.), as well as familiarity with CAD & FE Analysis tools (NX, Solidworks, ANSYS, Comsol etc.).
  • Electrical system cabling and grounding design including lightning protection and EMC considerations.
