Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified dynamic individual to become Specialist Services Manager for SBU Health Board Laboratory Medicine Service. The Service currently covers the areas and populations served by four hospital sites i.e. Morriston Hospital, Singleton Hospital, Neath Port Talbot Hospital and provides an SLA for Princess of Wales Hospital.The Service has a large bulk processing laboratory based in Morriston and two smaller essential service laboratories based in Singleton and the Princess of Wales Hospitals, while Neath Port Talbot Hospital hosts a Pathology reception service. The Service is progressive and plays a pivotal role in the provision of in excess of 9 million diagnostic tests per year which is essential for the delivery of high quality clinical care. The Service is UKAS accredited and also an accredited training laboratory. Following significant progress on cross training new staff, we remain committed to the achievement of a fully cross trained workforce to ensure benefits maximization of the Laboratory Medicine model.As Specialist Services Manager for Laboratory Medicine you will be responsible for the day to day operational activities to ensure the smooth running of the Specialist Protein Analysis, Immunology, Specialist Coagulation and Toxicology Services within the Laboratory Medicine Service of Swansea Bay University Heath Board (SBUHB). This post also supports the management of the Cellular Haematology Service and the management and operational service of the Laboratory Medicine Automation Services. The post holder will work closely with the Laboratory Medicine Automation Manager, and liaise with wider management team. The post holder will be managerially accountable to the senior management team.The post holder will be expected to ensure full integration of the Specialist Services within the Laboratory Medicine service between sites and disciplines across SBUHB including integration of pre-analytical and analytical processes, achieving optimal skills mix with sufficient specialism to ensure high quality Specialist Services and adequate multiskilling to deliver the resilience of core Specialist Services.Regular travel between sites is an essential requirement of this post.Applicants should have:

  • Experience of leadership and managing people
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements
  • Extensive experience of Quality Management Systems
  • Experience of Pathology IT systems
  • Extensive experience in equipment validation
  • Applicants for the post will need to be enthusiastic, maintain and develop high standards of quality and enjoy working as part of a team. You will be taking responsibility for service development and duties include supporting the teams, providing operational management and professional leadership for staff in the department.
