There are replacement posts joining a team of 21 Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons and 6 Consultant Spinal surgeons responsible for the provision of trauma and orthopaedic/spinal services to the Health Board.We are looking for two Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeons with a specialist interest to compliment the department.Trauma and Orthopaedic services at Swansea Bay University Health Board are provided for the local populations (over 500,000 residents) of Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot, and South Powys; and tertiary services are provided to the wider population of Mid and South West Wales (population 1,000,000) both for Ortho-plastic Trauma and Major Trauma as part of the South Wales and South Powys Trauma Network. SBU revenue allocation is in the region of £1073.2 million and a staffing complement of over 12,500.Morriston Hospital is the site of the A&E department for Swansea and surrounding area and is served by its own helipad for the South West Wales Air Ambulance and EMERTS Service, which is based in Swansea. With the forthcoming South Wales Programmes implementation Morriston Hospital will be a central part of the Major Trauma Network for South Wales and South Powys in collaboration with the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.Trauma services are provided at Morriston Hospital, Swansea with a total of approximately 8000 admissions per annum. Morriston Hospital currently runs a 1:12 consultant on-call rota.Elective surgery is undertaken at three sites – Morriston Hospital, Singleton Hospital and Neath Port Talbot Hospital. There were in excess of 5000 elective admissions during 2017/2018. Outpatient clinics are held on these sites and at community hospitals at Gorseinon and Ystradgynlais. The Department also has a Musculoskeletal Clinical Assessment Service with GPwSIs and Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners.The Trauma and Orthopaedic Service at Morriston Hospital provides a comprehensive orthopaedic service to its patients. This includes a spinal service delivering elective activity and urgent/emergency cover in conjunction with its orthopaedic on-call teams.All of the surgical services, including Trauma and Orthopaedics, are delivered through a large unified Department of Surgical Specialities.
