Job Description

About the Role and Service:We are seeking to recruit dynamic and caring band 5 nurses to work in the Older Adults Dementia unit based at Chelsham House, Bethlem Royal Hospital in South London & Maudsley NHS Trust. This unit has 16 beds. The lower number of patients will consequently enable us to better meet the care needs of patients who will have a high level of complexity and dependency. Chelsham have a higher staffing ratio to patients; as a result of the higher staffing ratio, staff will be able to support the enhanced personal care needs and engagement time required for people with complex needs in the context of dementia.Staff in all of our clinical settings, receive specialist training in providing dementia care. Within the dedicated In-patient Dementia Assessment Unit, patients will receive a higher level of specialist assessment and treatment in line with our behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) clinical care pathway. This care pathway guides the assessments that we make to identify the needs of the patient, please follow see links on the left.Patient and their families will engage with you on a daily basis and are looking to be treated with respect and dignity. We want our nurses to be fully integrated in the mental health and wellbeing of everyone they work with and feel comfortable communicating with different stakeholders.All our wards are signed up to John’s Campaign. This means that we welcome the Carers of our patients in the ward and we would like to work in partnership with them to support the needs of the patient as best we can. This may include supporting carers to stay with the patient at any time during the day and will put in supportive measures to make this happen.We give you the opportunity to become a mental health expert and be involved in cutting edge care and support. Our preceptorship and mentoring schemes mean you will be partnered with like-minded individuals who will be dedicated to your development.You must be a qualified RMN, LD Nurse or Acute Nurse in the final year of your RMN/LD/RGN course. It’s important that you have an understanding of multidisciplinary services and the challenges that older adults face from their mental health problems. Communication skills must be of the highest standard, you will be expected to engage with very vulnerable adults and their families. You must show that you are caring and compassionate as well as a desire to uphold the dignity of the Patient you support. We want to hire staff that are passionate about the care delivered to older adults and who will act as advocates for the reduction of stigma in our community.
