Job Description

Design ManagerLocation: Durham and SuffolkSalary: CompetitiveOur client is a leading building and civil engineering contractor with over 80 years experience of delivering world- class projects across the UK and Ireland.The company, which employs more than 550 people, has offices in Belfast, London, Cambridge and Edinburgh, with further site offices connecting its regional network.With over 45 live sites across the UK and Ireland, the company can offer you a varied career which gives you the opportunity to gain experience across a range of projects of all sizes, locations and sectors.The RoleThis role will see you coordinating the design elements and interfaces of all aspects of projects throughout the UK and ROI. Ensuring the quality of the design and monitor the delivery of the project, whilst liaising with clients, project staff, procurementteam and Site Management for developments on the design and procurement strategies.As a Design Manager you will be responsible for:

  • Manage the:
    • development of the design from pre-contract / contract award through to compilation of As Built information the design team (including temporary works) in seamlessly linking the design and the construction process
    • subcontract/supply chain design input
    • the design approval process, including consultation with third parties and Client approval
    • planning conditions and assign responsibilities to relevant parties to close out
    • compilation of As-Built information for the H&S Files and O&M manuals.
  • Prepare and agree detailed scope of services with all designers
  • Provide clear direction to designers for information delivery dates, monitor progress and actively manage to ensure designs are co-ordinated and approved in advance of the construction programme
  • Review all design information to ensure compliance, buildability, financial viability, Temporary works and more
  • Liaise directly with the Commercial Team and provide technical review of issues. Identify and record changes of scope
  • Identify and monitor design change
  • Resolve technical problems and design issues that emerge
  • Ensure where possible through correspondence and proactive design that the risk to the Contractor is minimised from potential defects, potential hazards and non-compliance
  • Advise on protocol and procedures for formalised workflows for formatted information
  • Implementation of BIM as required by the Project / assist BIM Manager
  • Support the Client as to their duties under CDM regulations and their obligations in the development of a design
  • Ensuring the design process recognises current legislation, standards and codes of practice, where appropriate.
Your required Skills and Experience Proven design management experience for projects within any of the following sectors: highways & bridges, water (pipelines or treatment plants), marine or renewables (windfarms).
  • Strong understanding of modern construction techniques, plant and equipment and an appreciation of logistical needs/issues
  • Commercial awareness in developing construction solutions to meet project targets
  • Contractually aware and conversant with common forms of contract - NEC, JCT etc.
  • Advanced knowledge in the complete MS Office suite, Asta Powerproject, AutoCAD and Navisworks
  • Excellent working knowledge of document management systems
  • Knowledge of MEICA integration into civils design
  • Have an interest in BIM and actively encourage its use on live projects.
  • Have a dynamic and involving approach in liaising with construction professionals, designers and Clients.
  • Have an ability to review, co-ordinate and manage large volumes of information efficiently and effectively
  • In-depth knowledge of all aspects of civil engineering projects and be efficient document managers
  • Educated to Degree Level in a Civil / Structural Engineering or related qualification
