Job Description

About the roleTo assess and underwrite new business applications in Home Finance and to assist the New Business Team manager in dealing with cases that need to be re-mandated due to the underwriter not having the required level of mandate. To support the New Business Manager by acting as a point of technical reference for lesser experienced members of the team and provide guidance in specialist lending and broker relationship management.About usFounded in 2007, we are a challenger bank that operates in accordance with Shariah principles, with offices in London, Milton Keynes and Wilmslow. We offer personal and corporate savings products and finance for UK residential and commercial property, in addition to sourcing and advising on UK real estate investments.Key responsibilities

  • Assess and underwrite new business cases in a pragmatic manner and within Credit Policy KYC guidelines to support the aim of the Bank to be recognised as a Specialist Lender by brokers and customers
  • Demonstrate a desire to underwrite cases by, where appropriate, suggesting alternative options on how a case may be acceptable as opposed to declining outright whilst still fully complying with Credit Policy and KYC governance. Where a decline decision is required ensure that this is communicated in a clear, concise, and timely manner to ensure that a positive relationship with the Broker / Customer is maintained.
  • Compose lending rationale that ensures lending decision is clearly structured and documented
  • Work cases in an efficient manner utilising the processes and policies in place to contribute to the business meeting agreed Service Level Agreements both internally and externally
  • Provide constructive feedback, guidance, and support to underwriter colleagues when re mandating their cases
  • Prepare, manage, and submit the rationale for escalation and exception cases to the New Business Team Manager and Head of Operations as required.
  • Prepare and submit MCIC approval requests in a structured, logical manner providing a clear rationale for the case being submitted
  • Be clear and articulate in telephone conversations and written communication with brokers to provide a clear rationale for the decision being conveyed or rationale for additional information being requested, to support the overall service proposition
  • Demonstrate a "Can Do" attitude with brokers and internal colleagues and manage interactions to support the Bank to deliver an outstanding level of service and be recognised externally for doing so
  • Working with the New Business Team Manager to identify ways in which current process can be further improved and support implementation of any changes to improve efficiency and enhance the service
  • Act as deputy on occasions for the New Business Team Manager and support them with the development of less experienced colleagues
  • Apply and adhere to all Financial Crime Policies in operation within GHB
  • Manage other ad hoc tasks to ensure swift processing of cases
  • Ensure that all Audit actions are completed within specified timescales.
  • Participate in process/strategy reviews or projects as Subject Matter Expert on underwriting processes to ensure continuous improvement of activities completed
  • Collaborate with Legal Advisors and Valuers as required
  • Skills required
  • Essential skills, knowledge, and experience: Previous experience of assessing and manually underwriting finance /traditional mortgage applications with specialist mortgage providers / challenger banks
  • Experience to include a mix of business including Buy to Let, Complex BTL/Portfolio/ HMO/MUFB cases as well as residential
  • Experience of assessing and delivering an appropriate service provision for High Net Worth customers
  • Track record of maintaining a senior mandate
  • Ability to utilise skills and knowledge to determine ways in which an application would be acceptable to Bank within our Credit and Financial Crime guidelines and governance
  • Knowledge of KYC/AML/financial crime regulation and Cifas.
  • Mortgage regulation and specifically MCOB/MCD
  • Articulate with excellent written and verbal communication skills
