Job Description

Location: Flexible (can be based remotely)Contract type: Fixed Term Contract (until 30th September 2021)Could you provide strategic direction to the Food Security and Livelihoods team, enable them to deliver the Chronic Hunger component of our International StrategyThis is a senior advisor position leading the British Red Cross work to address food insecurity and strengthen peoples livelihoods in some of the poorest countries impacted by disasters, conflict and chronic food crises. Our ambition is to further build the capacity of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement to deliver timely interventions at scale that address food insecurity.The role encompasses an interesting balance of strategic and technical responsibilities working with programmes, policy colleagues and other sector specialists. There is a strong focus on the food crises in Africa currently compounded by the Covid-19 pandemic.This role can be delivered at distance and will work within a wider Food Security and Livelihoods advisory team.With the right support we have seen that people can help themselves out of crises and out of poverty.Reporting to the Technical Team Manager, you will lead a team of Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) advisers and be responsible for leading three important areas of the Chronic Hunger component of the BRCs international strategy. These are;

  • Further strengthen our engagement with social protection mechanisms linked to climate informed early action to prevent food insecurity and reduce humanitarian dependency while supporting innovative collaboration partnership between NS and other agencies and Government:
  • Reinforce localisation through innovative, remote capacity building strategies and resources to support BRC and RCRC national societies to address food insecurity and build resilient livelihoods;
  • Gather evidence, best practice and learning to promote and support climate smart programming, resilience and long-term economic security interventions in areas affected by food insecurity.

Our International Strategy focuses on addressing Chronic Hunger, contributing to the global SDG and working to improve food security and more resilient livelihoods in some of the most difficult contexts, including chronic food insecure countries in Africa, regions affected by protracted conflicts and impacted by natural disasters. We do this through new and innovative approaches, improved early warning systems that protect and strengthen livelihoods and linking to social protection mechanisms. What we are looking forWith a genuine interest in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, you will be familiar with the global and local reach and the response capacity of this unique organisation and want to further strengthen its work. You will have experience and a strategic understanding of food security and livelihoods and knowledge of household economic security. You will be familiar with cash and voucher programming to support livelihoods and basic needs and interested in how these interventions support social protection mechanisms.
