Job Description

Summary Thank you for your interest in the role of Area Ranger, Wembury, South Devon, a 2-year project post created to support the delivery of our ambitious Land, Outdoors and Nature agenda. This is an exciting time to join our team as we are at a crucial stagein the delivery of our Land, Outdoors and Nature programme.As part of the countryside team’s wider focus on creating a ‘healthier, more beautiful natural environment’ across South Devon, an ambitious project is underway at Wembury to promote farming with nature and create a landscape rich in nature for people toenjoy. As part of the Wembury project, we are delivering a community woodland, working in partnership with Plymouth & South Devon Community Forest. By 2025 we will plant 90,000 trees and create access opportunities to bring people closer to nature. What its like to work here As part of the South Devon Countryside team, you will be based at Wembury but will be expected to attend team meetings at the Salcombe ranger base as and when needed (usually once a week).The South Devon Countryside team are responsible for approximately 35 miles of beautiful coastline stretching from Wembury to Dartmouth and are part of the larger South and East Devon portfolio. Our team, work with many volunteers and community groups todeliver excellent conservation work and create opportunities for the public to get engaged with our work and understand the NT cause. We have many Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and strong partnerships with like minded organisations. The NationalTrust’s Land Outdoors and Nature agenda creates an opportunity to pioneer a new approach to land management on a landscape scale. What youll be doing people closer to nature. You’ll play an important role in the delivery of the Trust’s Land Outdoors and Nature agenda, whilst building up partnerships with our farming and commercial tenants and local communities, as well as working alongside other organisationslike South Devon AONB, RSPB and Natural England. As part of the role you will help in creating a great place to work for volunteers and staff. You will help recruit and manage volunteers and lead on Risk Management, ensuring that high quality Risk Assessmentsare carried out, supervise and monitor compliance and safety procedures & undertake cross compliance site monitoring. You will play a valuable role in the Wembury project, and there will be an opportunity to lead on other projects identified in the site plansacross the portfolio’s Land Outdoors and Nature programme.Please also read the full role profile attached to this advert. Who were looking for To deliver this role successfully, you will need to;

  • Have practical experience of countryside/rural skills
  • Have evidence of good people management and leadership
  • Have strong organisational skills including work programming
  • Be able to manage contractors and small projects, including budgets
  • Have good wildlife identification skills
  • Habitat and species surveying experience
  • Empathy with, and significant experience of, working with volunteers
