Job Description

We are looking for someone to help provide the support for the staff in the Clinical Coding TeamWest Hertfordshire Hospital Trust West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust provides acute healthcare services to a core catchment population of approximately half a million people living in west Hertfordshire and the surrounding area. The hourly rate is £16.84 per hour.Responsibilities will cover several areas such as;The post holder will be required to:

  • Discuss queries and provide complex coding information to clinicians, other clinical staff and managers in order to achieve the highest quality documentation to facilitate accurate and timely coding.
  • Liaise with other departments including medical secretaries, nursing staff, medical records team and ward clerks to promote confidence and awareness in clinically coded data.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings to ensure knowledge and learning points are communicated across the team. This may involve presenting complex information to a group of staff.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced members of staff on coding issues.
  • Provide timely information on Clinical Commissioning Group Challenges and other NHS regulatory bodies.
  • Attend and contribute to specialty clinical meetings to help resolve coding issues encountered.
  • Planning and Organisation:
  • To manage own workload by working on own initiative and at times taking directives from the Coding Leads or the HOD, prioritising work where necessary to meet coding deadlines for statutory information requirements and financial flows.
  • Analysis and Judgement:
  • To abstract and analyse complex conditions and treatments from a variety of data sources including the interpretation of histology and other test results.
  • To use this information to assign accurate, timely and consistent diagnostic and operative coding to all inpatient episodes to meet agreed Trust and national timescales and deadlines, according to the coding conventions of ICD10 and OPCS4.
  • To input assigned clinical codes onto the PAS system, informing the Data Quality Team of any errors concerning admission, transfer and discharge information which might compromise Trust income.
  • To ensure that all case notes are tracked accurately on PAS to their destination in line with Trust policy.
  • To ensure that clinical coders are aware of agreed local variations to the national coding rules and to be responsible for implementing them accordingly.
  • Ensure all queries raised by other Trust staff are resolved promptly and effectively, or where appropriate are referred to the senior coding staff.
  • To use judgement based on training and knowledge acquired through National Standards and work based experience to translate complex cases where the information is not
  • readily available or easy to translate to coded data.
