Job Description

LOCUM CONSULTANT IN CELLLULAR PATHOLOGY Introduction We are seeking to appoint a full time locum Consultant cellular pathologist with six month fixed term contract. The post affords the opportunity to work with 9 other pathologists in a major department in one of the larger Trusts in the Eastern Region. WHHT has acute services which are centralised on the Watford General Hospital site. These include gynae cancer which is centralised for a large geographical area encompassing East Hertfordshire and South Bedfordshire. The Trust also has services at Hemel Hempstead Hospital and St Albans City Hospital. The post holder will have specific interests in line with the clinical service needs. The post holder is expected to participate in the surgical pathology service and there is the opportunity to participate in the Coroner’s autopsy service. There is no cervical screening cytology service at the Trust. The post holder will have the opportunity to participate in the diagnostic cytology service. There is a degree of subspecialisation in the department and the precise job content will be discussed on an individual basis in consultation with consultant colleagues. However, there is a significant workload in breast cancer, gynaecological cancer and in gastro-intestinal pathology including work for the Bowel Screening Programme. It is likely that the appointee would participate one of these specialty areas together with support for other areas in cancer reporting, subject to the interests of the successful applicant and service needs within the Trust. Consultants in the department currently spend approximately 85% of their time involved directly in clinical service provision and 15% undertaking support activities, research and postgraduate teaching.Histopathology and diagnostic cytology are centralised at the Hemel site and the post holder will be based there.Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues. On 6th December 2018, following a review of pathology services; the Trust Board approved the preferred option for the trust to act as a commissioner of pathology services, including the proposal that the provision of pathology diagnostics and analysis is outsourced to a new supplier. For informal enquiries and arrangements to visit the departments please contact Dr Anju Agarwal, Clinical Lead for Cellular Pathology, Tel.We are an equal opportunities employer and would welcome applications from all sections of the community.
