Job Description

Nature of the Role: To provide support for all students with special educational needs or disabilities at the college. The ideal candidate with have a significant level of relevant SENCO experience obtained in either school or college. All students study computer science for at least 60% of their curriculum, with regular off-curriculum industry projects with partners such as King Games, Deloitte and Bank of America Merrill Lynch.We are passionate about high quality teaching and learning, using industrys problems to bring education to life for our learners and thinking of innovative new approaches to communicating some of techs more challenging concepts!Our students achieve highly across all subjects and progress to an amazing range of destinations. In Summer 2020 these included: Deloitte, Vodafone, KPMG, Goldman Sachs, BT, BBC, Oxford University, Nottingham University, Queen Mary University and many more with over 70% progressing to their first choice destination.We received Good with Outstanding features in our first Ofsted inspection in October 2018.Purpose of the RoleAs SENCO you will fulfill a critical role in ensuring that students with special educational needs and disabilities at Ada receive the support they need. This will include overseeing the day-to-day operation of Adas SEND policy, supporting the identification of children with special educational needs, coordinating provision for children with SEND, liaising with parents of children with SEND, as well as liaising with other providers, educational psychologists and external agencies. You will also ensure the records of all students with SEND are kept and are up to date.Alongside the Assistant Principal and Principal, you will ensure that all staff follow the colleges SEND policy. This will involve identifying, assessing and planning for needs and developing support programmes to meet those needs and break down any barriers to learning. It may involve calling in outside professionals such as an educational psychologist.Key aspects of the role:

  • The identification of children with special educational needs or disabilities in the college
  • Assessing and planning interventions or support programmes to meet the needs of individual students
  • Tracking and monitoring the progress of students with SEND
  • Ensuring there is high quality teaching and intervention for students with SEND
  • Developing the SEND provision in the college further
  • Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensuring students with special educational needs are receiving high quality teaching and their needs are catered for.
  • Work with a full range of external agencies to support the educational needs of individual students and their wider life
  • Complete all required paperwork for students on Education Health and Care Plans, ensuring the college is delivering high quality support and interventions to meet their individual needs and that this is regularly reviewed, alongside parents/carers, other staff members and relevant external agencies
  • Work alongside the Exams Officer to secure additional exam access arrangements, as required
  • To train and support Learning Support Assistants in their roles.
  • To secure additional funding through High Needs Funding applications and ensure this funding is deployed appropriately.
  • To lead Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for the sixth form staff building their practice and knowledge in line with key responsibilities including Safeguarding training, Behaviour, PSHE and SEND.
  • To represent the college and key students at meetings with external professionals, feeding back information with other members of staff as required.

  • Embody Adas values of Curiosity, Rigour, Creativity, Collaboration and Resilience with staff and students on a daily basis and work to instil a culture and ethos that evidences these.
  • Work to ensure the quality of student experience is rated highly through student and parent surveys.
  • Assist with the recruitment and selection of staff.
  • To contribute to the management of key college events, including open events, consultation evenings, assessment days and welcome events.
  • Assist in planning and managing the student recruitment process, alongside the Outreach Manager, including carrying out interviews.
  • Help foster effective links with industry partners, the FE and HE sectors and the local community.
  • Contribute to the implementation of the Colleges operational activities.
  • To assist the careers and progression lead to ensure all students are working towards suitable progression routes either into the digital sector or onto a relevant university course, including support in managing the UCAS application process and with the writing and editing of college UCAS references.

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • SENCO qualification
  • Experience with KS4 or post 16 students
  • Evidence of understanding what excellent special needs support looks like
