Job Description

Ferry Crew Cleaner/Relief | Torpoint | Full Time| £24,983.52 (based on average 37hr/week) inclusive of standard shift, night and weekend working allowances, paid monthly in arrearsOur client delivers an important public service to join Plymouth with the Rame Peninsula in South East Cornwall. The service operates up to 3 ferries at any one time, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is the busiest estuarial ferry crossing in the UK,carrying approximately 2.4 million vehicles per year.Cleaner/Reliefs have an essential role in the delivery of the ferry service which consists of nine crews. The ferry crews work to a 9-week cyclical rota which consists of early shifts (06:0014:00), late shifts (14:0022:00), as well as one week of consecutive night shifts (22:0006:00) in the cycle. Ferry Crew Cleaner/Reliefs do not cover night shiftsuntil trained as a Collector. Are you the right person for the job

  • A minimum of 12 months experience of Cash Handling (including dealing with floats/cashing-up) and delivering high levels of Customer Service in a busy customer- facing environment. This experience should be based on previous employment and relevantto the last three years
  • You should be a team player and must be prepared to be flexible to support manning and rota requirements and the variation of tasks that you will be required to undertake while on shift
  • The ideal candidate will be keen to develop both their own skills and support the continued development of the organisation
What will your role as a Ferry Crew Cleaner/Relief look like
  • You will be immediately trained as Cleaner and soon after as a Collector. Once trained Cleaner/Reliefs are required to act up regularly as a Collector, as well as other roles, and after gaining sufficient experience and knowledge opportunity may ariseto apply for a full time Collector vacancy
  • You will be trained in cleaning, customer service, traffic management, boat handling and firefighting. These core competencies are essential in the safe and smooth running of the ferries and wider operation
  • We run a dynamic shift rota involving over 60 staff and although the primary role is cleaning duties there are regular opportunities for Cleaners to cover Collector shifts as a result of staff absence (i.e. during staff leave, training, meetings and sicknessetc.). This may involve half or full-shift cover, but all cover and overtime are managed on a fair basis. Ability to consistently demonstrate both cleaning and relief duties is essential
  • The primary role will consist of cleaning the ferry, slipways and associated infrastructure. We run a busy 24/7 service every day of the year with shifts covering 24hrs a day to deliver a schedule of 1, 2 or 3 Ferries. Weather conditions can be challengingand on occasion make tasks more demanding. The role requires extensive daily interaction with the public and working with a wide variety of crew and staff
  • Cleaner/Relief shift patterns do vary slightly to the above detail and they are not routinely required to work the night shift, although once trained they do have the opportunity to act up as a Collector, which attracts associated pay benefits
What can you expect in return
  • Generous LGPS pension schemecurrently 20% employer contribution
  • Generous holiday entitlement24 days per annum plus b/hols, which rises to 27 days per annum after 5 years service
  • Generous maternity and paternity allowance
  • Access to an employee assistance programme
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Dedicated free staff parking available on both sides of the river
