Job Description

This secondary school in Taunton is looking for a SENCO / English teacher to start in September. This role is for 5 days per week and will initially be on a supply basis but is likely to become permanent should the teacher and school desire.The successful candidate will have worked as a SENCO before and be able to teach up to GCSE English. Rates of pay are negotiable, depending on experience.Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Have accountability for the planning and leading of English classes for KS3 and KS4 students, ensuring differentiation of learning needs, reflecting all abilities.
  • Teaching a small class all of whom have EHCPs where the main need is SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs).
  • Communicating with parents and caregivers over all aspects of the students progress, academic, social and emotional.
  • SENCO Responsibilities:
  • To work in partnership with SLT and other staff to monitor student behaviour, attendance and achievement and, decide on appropriate sanctions, interventions and rewards.
  • Ensuring effective use of support staff within the classroom.
  • Develop the range of teaching strategies and equipment that could be utilised for students with SEND; support the identification of needs and disseminate the most effective teaching methods for those students. This includes monitoring the progress and evaluating the strategies in place.
  • Ensure challenging but realistic expectations of behaviour and achievement are set for students with SEND and work with teaching staff to ensure the accessibility of lessons for all.
  • Working with parents/carers and teachers to review and implement support plans
  • Ensure SEND students have appropriate exam arrangements in place
  • Essential Criteria:
  • QTS
  • A SENCO qualification
  • The right candidate may not need a SENCO qualification if they have the appropriate experience acting as a SENCO and are willing to obtain the qualification once in the role
  • Experience teaching children with SEND
  • Able to teach English to GCSE level
  • Considerable knowledge of the National Curriculum
  • Confident in the administration relating to EHCPs, Behaviour Management and the safeguarding of children
  • A team player and able to effectively manage SEND support staff
  • Confident IT user - familiar with Microsoft Office, CPOMS and SIMS
  • Have a right to work in the UK (A Valid Visa)
  • Available to work 5 days a week 8:30-3:30
  • At least one recent child based reference and relevant DBS/ Police checks
