Job Description

POST: CONSULTANT in Regional Anaesthesia BASE: AIREDALE General Hospital, Airedale NHS Foundation TrustHOURS: 10 PAS PER WEEKWe’re delighted you’re thinking of joining us.This post provides an opportunity to pursue a specialist interest in regional anaesthesia in an award winning hospital covering a large geographical area between the spectacular Yorkshire Dales and the cosmopolitan centres of Bradford and Leeds. Yorkshire has recently been voted as the third best region in the world by Lonely Planet, and our local town of Skipton has been voted as the best place to live in the UK by the Sunday Times, commending its top class schools, great transport links, low crime and beautiful surrounding countryside.The successful applicant will join a team of enthusiastic anaesthetists who can offer expertise and training in Regional Anaesthesia, Critical Care, Leadership and Sustainability, Quality Improvement, and Perioperative Medicine. The department has recently been awarded Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) having been commended by ACSA in many aspects including team communication, simulation training and Specialty Doctor career development.This is a dynamic department and the successful applicant will be required to contribute to ongoing service development. We expect involvement in our existing quality improvement projects and also welcome ideas for new work streams. We strongly encourage leadership development. There is a trust leadership programme in place and study leave is encouraged for this. We also believe in maintaining work life balance. The department has a programme of social events and the Yorkshire Dales is in an area of outstanding natural beauty with many outdoor activities available.Many of the consultants either hold or have held trust and external, education and leadership positions, and Airedale is well represented at national and international conferences and events with Consultants and trainees presenting their work. Consequently Airedale anaesthetic department is scored consistently highly on trainee surveys. The current lead for regional anaesthesia is a faculty member of the Yorkshire Society of Regional Anaesthesia (YSORA) and holds the European Diploma in Regional Anaesthesia.Awake surgery under regional anaesthesia is currently offered for all upper limb surgeries including shoulder surgery. Work is currently underway to build two orthopaedic barn theatres and an ambulatory procedure area (completion date December 2021). Once the ambulatory area is in place this will be used as a hand unit 1 day/ week. It is expected that the successful applicant will provide support in the development of this service. There are also opportunities to further develop regional anaesthesia services for foot & ankle surgery and lower limb revision arthroplasty depending on clinical interest.We have a successful regional anaesthesia fellow programme which has been running for 3 years with good feedback. The successful candidate will be expected to provide educational and clinical supervision to fellows. Fellows are taught a full range of USS guided peripheral regional anaesthesia techniques, particularly upper and lower limb, abdominal and chest wall blocks. Spinal USS is also taught.The current regional anaesthesia lead is looking to succession plan this role. The successful applicant will have opportunity to express interest in becoming regional anaesthesia lead providing leadership for the development of regional anaesthesia services, the fellow programme and faculty membership of YSORA, timescale dependent on experience.At the start of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the department successfully split the Consultant on call rota in line with GPICS staffing requirements for Critical Care; however we have now reverted to a general on call rota pending on-going substantive recruitment (funding is already agreed to expand the Consultant body to 20 WTEs). There is therefore the option of the successful applicant supporting the 1:16 General on call rota including Critical Care or joining an anaesthesia/Obstetrics on call rota with an anticipated frequency of 1:9.The initial job plan is for 10.3 PA’s with opportunity for extra PA’s (up to 12 in total). Time is allocated within job plans for any additional responsibilities in addition to SPA time. Professional leave is available for additional responsibilities in addition to study leave.We are proud of our team culture and recognise that a happy transition to a new job requires a supportive environment. All new consultants are offered a mentor. In addition -The post holder will be offered 1 PA ‘induction and leadership development time’ for the first year to embed as a consultant at Airedale, in addition to their 1.5 SPA. This allows new consultants time to perform core CPD such as clinical and educational supervisor training and duty of candour training as well as receiving mentoring and coaching as necessary, in addition to their study leave allocation. Shadowing colleagues to gain insights into how different clinical areas and leadership roles work is also recommended.As well as new Consultants, we welcome applications from established Consultants. There may be the opportunity to modify the draft job plan to accommodate specific commitments or skills. Job plans greater than 10.3 PAs are also available on request.
