We are offering an opportunity to an individual with experience/interest in the therapeutic benefits of vocational work and workshop / practical skills, to join our Occupational Therapy team here in Secure Services. You will be based in the Malago Centre working between the Rivers café and multi-purpose workshop.Secure Services here at Blackberry Hill Hospital comprises of an 81 bedded medium secure service and Wickham, a 29 bedded low secure service. Both units focus on helping service users who have serious mental health conditions and who are linked to the criminal justice system.We have a large and well-resourced department for the provision of activities (including 2 workshops, an art room, a cafe and a large garden). It is a well-staffed department which offers regular support and supervision.The Rivers cafe is a purpose built area to assist with the development of transferrable vocational skills, whilst working in a catering environment. The café is run by service users and supported by a specialist OT technician with a catering background. Your role will be to support and assist the specialist OT technician with the development of service user’s occupational skills and abilities.We have a multi-purpose workshop where a range of practical / vocational / leisure skills and activities can be practiced and developed. You will be supported by a member of experienced staff who will assist in the planning and running of activities, for example this may involve you teaching basic DIY skills or bicycle maintenance.We promote recovery through engaging in meaningful activities which maintain or improve the service users’ level of functioning and quality of life. Much emphasis is placed on providing service users with the opportunity to develop or adapt life skills. Through this, we aim to empower each individual to fulfil their maximum potential and independence, physically, psychologically and socially.The role requires participating in the Occupational Therapy assessment, treatment and evaluation process through use of technical and creative skills in workshop and café environments.Experience in working with people with mental health difficulties in essential. Vocational work skills are desirable. The ability to work creatively, and an understanding and passion for the therapeutic benefits of activity and work are essential. Good interpersonal and communication skills will be required to interact with a wide range of people.We are currently seeking 37.5 hours a week, split between the café and multi-purpose workshop, with a standard pattern of Monday – Friday between 9-5pm although some flexibility may be required.
