This post is for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist with a sub specialist interest in UGI/HPB and breast cancer. This is a 10 session post and working hours are flexible to accommodate candidates who may have caring duties. There are opportunities to develop off site working as needed to allow remote radiotherapy planning and chemotherapy prescribing.UGI/HPBThe postholder will provide a comprehensive systemic and radiotherapy service for patients with hepatopancreatobiliary cancers in the Swansea Bay area. They will be part of the South Wales HPB MDT, with Morriston hosting the pancreatic surgical service for all of South Wales, which meets on Tuesday mornings. The systemic therapy will be shared with a medical oncologist and cross cover for radiotherapy provided by the clinical oncologist covering Hywel Dda.The postholder will be expected to lead on pancreatic radiotherapy developments including moving to hypofractionation and in due course possibly stereoablative radiotherapy, which is currently centralised in the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff. Mutual cross cover will be expected for colleagues treating patients in other parts of South West Wales.The postholder will join a team of 3 clinical oncologists delivering radiotherapy for oesophageal cancer. The postholder will have direct responsibility for patients from Pembrokeshire, working alongside the medical oncologist covering that area, but also providing mutual cross cover for the other clinical oncologists. Depending on the experience of the postholder there may be opportunity to develop a sub interest in proton radiotherapy.The postholder would also be expected to support the opening of clinical trials in these tumour sites.The postholder will see in the region of 80 new UGI/HPB patients a year. The upper GI team is supported by a UGI CNS, pharmacist and GP with extended interest in oncology. Review radiographers, both of which are independent prescribers, undertake on treatment reviews.Breast The postholder will be an integral member of the Breast Cancer team, currently including three Medical Oncologists, one Clinical Oncologist (this post will be a second clinical oncology post) and a Specialist Nurse for Metastatic Breast Cancer, and supported by Research Nurses in the Cancer Institute and in Hywel Dda. New patients are referred through two Breast Cancer MDTs (ABMU and Hywel Dda). The MDTs work according to shared guidelines that are updated once a year, and also share a wide portfolio of clinical trials.They will provide all of the radiotherapy for the patients of West Wales and expected to be a part of the ongoing developments in breast radiotherapy including recruitment to clinical trials.Patients receiving radiotherapy will be referred back to the surgical team for follow up.The postholder will see approximately 160-200 new breast RT patients a year.Acute oncologyABMU HB is in the process of developing an Acute Oncology Service (AOS). All Consultant Oncologists will provide an advisory role to the AOS during their on call days and will make adjustments to their routine clinical commitments accordingly. This is a 10 session post and the on call commitment will be pro-rata. During their on call day consultants will provide support to the inpatient unit daily and at the weekend.SPA This post includes 3.0 sessions of SPA. It will be expected that the candidate will, in addition to CPD, after consultation with relevant managerial colleagues, identify an area of SPA activity that brings benefit to the department. The post has the option of a whole day of SPA that can be undertaken off site which would support the postholder in undertaking outside interests.Depending on the skills of the candidate, there will be significant opportunities to support the development of a trial portfolio in UGI/HPB and breast cancer.
