SRUC is unique in Scotland and one of the largest organisations of its kind in Europe. Our ambitious and exciting vision is to work at local, national and international levels, leading innovation and sustainable development in agriculture and rural sectors. An exciting new post is available in which the successful candidate will lead the delivery of a BBSRC project studying the role of skill in minimising the welfare costs of aggressive behaviour. Skill is hypothesised to allow animals to win contests moreeasily or to successfully signal defeat in contests they will lose.To date, the role of skill has not been well explored in any species. The project will determine whether skill helps to bring contests to an efficient end. It will also explore what benefits this has for animal welfare and how early-life experiences canbe changed to promote development of skill.Aggressive behaviour is a persistent challenge to animal welfare in commercial pig production. The project will, therefore, focus on pigs and will use principles and approaches developed in behavioural ecology and ethology to understand the role of skillin driving individual differences in the welfare costs paid during aggressive encounters. It is hoped that this will provide new insight with which to develop future solutions to this currently intractable welfare problem, with relevance across species. The project will be based at SRUC near Edinburgh and is a collaboration with Queens University Belfast and the University of PlymouthIn this role, you will be responsible for jointly developing experimental protocols, overseeing and contributing to behavioural data collection and leading the analysis and publication of the data. You will work closely with Dr Simon Turner as line manager,Dr Gareth Arnott from Queens University Belfast and Professor Mark Briffa from the University of Plymouth (with expertise in contest theory and skill assessment respectively). The candidate will work closely with technical staff who will assist with datacollection and animal husbandry. The post holder will join an existing team of two post-doctoral researchers and three PhD students working in the broader area of the drivers of individual variation in social behaviour and its welfare consequences. This is a fixed term contract for 3 years.Further details on the requirements of this role can be found in the Job Particulars document which you must read before applying for this role.
