Job Description

Machine Learning EngineerPertemps Scotland Ltd are working with our client in Edinburgh to recruit for a Machine Learning Engineer in the Public Sector on a temporary basis for 6 Months with potential extension.Due to current circumstances this role will be based remotely.Day rate - £325 to £425 (Outside)The post is to work alongside the NFI geospatial data engineer to ensure that the data and imagery from satellites and other remote sources is prepared and available for use in conjunction with the large geospatial data sets collected under the NFI programme, and develop, write and run machine learning (ML) code.Example projects include:

  • Clearfell identification from Sentinel 1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data.
  • 1990 woodland map generation using Landsat, including extending the algorithm to discern between conifer and broadleaved trees in forests, and discerning priority habitats within broadleaved forests.
  • Trees outside woodland analysis
    • You will also work on gathering together Analysis Ready Data (ARD) datasets from a range of computing environments (Google Earth Engine, CEDA, JASMIN) for these projects. You will work on tasks related to data collation and machine learning techniques applied to satellite data. You will be responsible for:
  • Compiling and analysing data.
  • Creating data pipelines.
  • Gathering and preparing ARD data.
  • Creating training data for ML algorithms.
  • Creating and running ML code, including testing.
    • Essential Criteria
  • Degree in IT, data engineering or science, environmental science or GIS and/or equivalent experience.
  • Problem solving skills in the field of geo processing in GIS and/or data analysis and data processing.
  • Capacity to build data pipelines for analysis.
  • Experience in writing Python or R code.
  • Experience in geo processing and/or data analysis of large environmental datasets
    • Desirable Criteria
  • Experience and knowledge of machine learning techniques.
  • Knowledge of High Performance Computing (HPC) systems including cloud computing services.
  • Knowledge of earth observation, forestry and/or natural environment data and domains.
  • Experience with desktop and server-based GIS software packages and databases such as ESRI.
    • Basic Disclosure Scotland Certificate Required if success
