Job Description

  • You will be responsible for ensuring that national coding rules and conventions are followed, and standards adhered to and will be required to contribute towards service case load.
  • You will have the ability to code across all specialties, with a focus on complex and deceased cases, by analysing and coding clinical notes using ICD10 and OPCS classification, within set standards and targets.
  • You will also ensure that the high standard of clinical coding is maintained and developed.
  • The requirement is to take over the current in-depth coding and validations with the clinicians at the trust and develop it further; ensuring the high standard of clinical coding is maintained and developed.
  • Analyze and code clinical notes using ICD10 and OPCS classification, to ensure accurate, timely and consistent clinical coding within set standards and targets.
Key Clinical / Operational Responsibilities
  • To accurately abstract and interpret complex clinical data for coding inpatient data using ICD10 and OPCS classifications and input the data onto Medicode
  • To liaise with clinicians and their support staff concerning interpretation of case note documentation affecting coding.
  • To assist the Clinical Coding Service Manager and the Auditor/Trainer on preparation of local agreements and coding policies.
  • To assist clinical coders, and prioritise their workload
  • To work with the Clinical Coding Service Manager to ensure all coding timescales are met and ensure Clinical Coders meet their targets.
  • To investigate and correct complex clinical coding data rejected or queried by recipient information systems and advise the Data Standards Manager of such problems that could impact on Trust Performance.
  • To participate in ongoing clinical coding training to meet national standards and Trust requirements. This may require travelling to other organisations outside of core working hours.
  • To attend clinical coding related meetings as directed by the Clinical Coding Service Manager. This may require travelling to other organisations outside of core working hours
  • Any other duties, appropriate to the grade, as required.
Policy, Service, Organisational and Professional Responsibilities
  • Identify staff, own training needs, and maintain professional development in accordance with national and local requirements.
  • Demonstrate an approachable manner to all staff and facilitate mentorship and preceptorship initiatives.
  • Ensure that poor performance is managed according to Trust policy.
  • Take appropriate action to ensure that statutory regulations, trust policies and procedures, Coding Policy and Procedure, Health and Safety, Fire, etc. are strictly adhered to
  • To maintain and promote the professional image of the Clinical Coding service at BHR
  • To assist the coding management in the training and development of trainee coders
General
  • To be responsible for the continual compliance with CQC standards and outcomes.
  • To be aware of, and work in line with, our Trust’s Safeguarding Adults and Children procedures.
  • To take on other duties appropriate to the grade within Coding Service and Trust.
  • Undertake physical skills for the use of IT packages, a combination of sitting standing and walking with little requirement. There might be a requirement to exert light physical effort for short periods of time.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
  • An accredited Clinical Coder (ACC)
  • A university degree preferably in Medicine related studies / equivalent level experience
  • NHS Digital approved Clinical Coding Auditor/Trainer (or be working towards it)
  • Extensive clinical coding experience gained within an Acute Trust
  • Great communication skills
  • Ability to interpret various clinical coding reports
  • Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology
  • Extensive knowledge of human anatomy and physiology clinical coding of all specialities
  • Understanding of uses and importance of clinical coding
  • Good understanding of HRGs and PbR
  • Ability to identify various data quality errors
  • Ability to identify various data quality errors.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret complex clinical information from a wide variety of sources
  • Ability to concentrate, show attention to detail and work under pressure.
  • Able to organize and prioritise own workload under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal skills and able to work effectively with staff at all levels
  • Ability to show initiative and to work within a team
  • Excellent persuasive and motivation skills
