The Newcastle OfficeWhat started in April 2016 as a small group of paralegals working on corporate due diligence, now has close to 300 permanent staff across 19 teams and 10 departments, making it the second largest office in EMEA. The Newcastle Office houses a wide variety of teams including Legal (qualified lawyers, paralegals and claims experts); Innovation, Design & Technology specialists; Knowledge; and afull range of Business Services teams.The Newcastle Office is a core part of the firms global change and innovation programme, NRF Transform, and promotes a culture of continuous improvement. This encourages innovation and is setting the bar, in terms of what is possible in legal service delivery,and adjacent services.Legal Services Team:The Newcastle Office is home to our Legal Services Team, which is staffed by associates and paralegals.Associates in the Legal Services Team initially work in an agile manner for one of the three practice groups (Banking, Corporate and Disputes), before specialising further and becoming directly aligned to a specific team within a practice group.The Role:With 1200 lawyers globally we have one of largest disputes practices in the world. We resolve domestic and cross-border mandates, international arbitrations and investigations and enforcement for clients across all key industry sectors including financialinstitutions, energy, infrastructure, mining and commodities, transport, technology and innovation and life sciences and healthcare. We are looking for a disputes associate to join an established practice group at an exciting time. We would expect you to have plenty of opportunities to work on a diverse range of cross-border instructions and with a number of different partners acrossthe various teams in the Disputes practice group. We are looking for individuals who will form strong working relationships across different teams and will relish the opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary environment, managing a diverse workload.The role will focus on contentious work across a range of sectors including domestic, international and cross border matters and will involve a high level of responsibility for day to day management of contentious matters, aiding in the management and supervisionof junior colleagues and reporting to supervising partners. In addition, the role will involve maintaining a close working relationship with and supporting our award winning banking and corporate practices on a range of matters. You will also be expected toexcel in familiarisation with the firms change and innovation programme, Transform, in order to be able to leverage legal tech and alternative resource at every opportunity.Skills and Experience Required:
  • Qualified as a solicitor in England & Wales (although candidates with experience in certain other jurisdictions will also be considered)
  • Experience acting for commercial clients in contentious matters encompassing domestic, international and cross-border issues
  • Experience of a wide range of dispute resolution methods including litigation, international arbitration, adjudication and major forms of ADR
  • Experience of preparing submissions and evidence and working with experts and counsel
  • Experience of leading on large scale disclosures
  • Excellent legal research skills
  • Strong academic record
  • Proactive and self-starting individual with an international outlook
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong commercial awareness along with a commercial, pragmatic and problem-solving approach
  • A flexible approach to work and open to working across multi-disciplinary teams
