Job Description

Salary: Band 9 £39,267 - £45,546 dependent on experience Location: Agile, Forth Banks Police Station and homeworking Hours/Contract: 37 hours per week, permanent The roleHere at Northumbria Police, we think our region is amazing! It takes a great deal of people from different backgrounds, with diverse skills and experience to serve our force area effectively, think you have what it takes to help us make a difference Thiscould be the perfect time for you to join us in our Digital Policing department as a Development Support & System Engineer.You will participate in the delivery of technical support of all in-house and partner developed Java-based software products and services. The Development Support & System Engineer will need to be able to understand code and provide optimal solutions forcore problems, code fixes and data adjustments to diagnose and fix operational issues, delivering an outstanding customer experience.Working closely with other operational run teams to support maintenance, installation and patching activities and tasks to exacting standards and to ensure expected levels of service are continually met or exceeded.What you’ll do

  • You will be part of a team that maintains and troubleshoots live java applications ensuring robust and high availability systems are provided to the business.
  • You will provide a pivotal resource against the continual development of business, legislative, political and wider criminal justice driven changes assisting to achieve overall Force strategic objectives.
  • Work with guidance to ensure new and ongoing development across the integration and application landscapes meets agreed timescales and quality measures.
  • You will collaborate, engage and build positive relationships with customers, clients, stakeholders and partners to understand their needs, priorities and how technology can support the realisation of these needs.
What you’ll bring
  • Core Java skills with knowledge of Object orientated principles and OO data structures.
  • Spring Framework with Springboot knowledge and knowledge of spring libraries including Spring data and Spring Web.
  • Good SQL skills with knowledge of SQL server and/or Oracle DB. Must be comfortable with performing select and update queries.
  • Good debugging investigation skills including being able to read application logs especially java log statements.
  • Comfortable with using debugging tools including IntelliJ/Eclispe IDE debugger and Edge/Chrome browser dev tools.
  • Configuring application properties and restarting applications sometimes from the command line requirements into work packages would be desirable.
  • You will show a drive and ambition for continuous development with a strong customer service ethos.
  • You will have proven analytical and problem-solving abilities and being able to translate customer requirements into work packages would be desirable.
Some of the below skills would also be desirable but not essential:
  • You will have some expertise in front-end technologies including JavaScript, CSS3 and HTML5 and 3rd party libraries including SpringBoot, React Js, Angular, jQuery and LESS.
  • Knowledge of server-side programming languages including Java, Ruby and Python would be desirable.
  • You should have a working understanding of enterprise cloud computing.
  • You should have demonstrable knowledge of DBMS technology e.g. SQLServer, Oracle, MongoDB and MySQL.
  • You will have an understanding of agile methodologies, TDD and software development best practice.
