Business Manager (Countryside and Land Management Services)Reference: OCT20227045Location: Moira, Co Antrim, Northern IrelandSalary: £33,600.00 - £37,275.00 Per AnnumHours: Full-Time role, 37.5 hours per weekContract: PermanentBenefits: Pension, Life Assurance, 26 days Annual LeaveIf you enjoy leading, managing and developing a team of people, while instigating and delivering large-scale habitat management conservation programmes and projects, then this is the role for you! You will drive and oversee the RSPBs machinery operationsacross Northern Ireland. You will be energetic, practically minded and able to deliver an ambitious work programme. You will have an in-depth understanding of machinery operations and be experienced in project management, business development, compliance &risk and contract management.The Countryside Land Management Services (CLMS) is a unique machinery operation specialising in conservation. This role will sit within the East NI Area Team and report to the Area Manager and will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of relevant outcomesof the RSPB Saving Nature Strategy. The role will lead, manage and develop the land management services portfolio, helping to deliver a work programme that supports and contributes to the landscape-scale conservation of priority landscapes, species, and habitats.Whats the role aboutYou will have an important external role, building positive relationships with key partners and stakeholders so that RSPBs policies and messages are understood and furthered within relevant partnerships and fora.As a Business Manager within the Area Team, this role will contribute expertise to the operational area management structures, where you will monitor and report on the Business plan and influence the development of work plans or project ideas. You will alsocontribute operational experience to RSPBs funding and communications objectives, particularly through communicating our conservation messages across Northern Ireland. This work will be throughout NI, the office base will be Moira Depot with some flexibilityfor working from home.Key areas of work will include:

  • Accountable for managing CLMS resources and key business metrics to achieve agreed net profit targets, whilst delivering first-class habitat management and conservation.
  • Accountable for developing new client relationships and income streams, in order to grow client base and spread business risk.
  • Accountable for maintaining and managing existing clients/contracts, in order to ensure contract retention/growth, increased profitability, and confidence in long-term planning.
  • Accountable for ensuring that all commercial services are relevant and competitive, consistent with RSPB brand/values, and based on a robust marketing and pricing strategy, based on client/market needs.
  • Accountable for initiating, maintaining, and developing effective working relationships with appropriate statutory bodies, stakeholders, and partnerships to ensure statutory compliance, and adherence to relevant standards/procedures, and potentially generatenew business leads.
  • Accountable for all tender documentation and commercial proposals, including the setting of contractual day rates, sub-contractor approval, and all financial considerations/content.
  • Responsible for providing strategic leadership and management to staff.
  • Responsible for investigating new business opportunities and work areas that exhibit innovation and creativity, while encouraging financial growth and improved standards.
  • Responsible for managing financial systems, to ensure an appropriate level of competency/compliance (in areas such as goods and procurement, invoicing, VAT, and grant funding).
  • Work closely with reserve and landscape teams to identify opportunities for joint and contractual working, to reduce core cost, increase turnover, and mitigate overall risk to the organisation.
Essential skills, knowledge and experience:
  • Degree level education or equivalent experience in business and finance or land management.
  • Machinery and Land management (a good understanding of machinery and habitat management).
  • Personnel management (including operational, health and safety, risk management).
  • Statutory frameworks: ensuring there is full compliance in delivery land management contracts.
  • Leadership: able to lead and develop a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strategic thinking: to set business development, strategy and risk management.
  • Problem-solving in order to ensure work specifications and contract terms are fulfilled despite unforeseen variables.
  • Multi-tasking: the ability to think on your feet and adapt to rapidly changing situations (in the management of personnel and delivery of service contracts).
  • Risk management: financial, reputational, and operational
  • Time management and prioritisation, in order to manage a complex role with multiple and competing demands.
  • Budget management: expenditure, income and complex key performance indicators,
  • Developing business plans, building and maintaining client relationships and generating income.
