Job Description

Head Gardener/HorticulturistSalalry: £25000+ D.O.ELocation:Market harboroughA General

  • Maintaining and further developing of the gardens, lawns, and parkland of the Hothorpe Hall estate (about eleven acres in total)
  • Maintaining the garden buildings
  • Ensuring the proper functioning of the irrigation systemirrigation system to be implemented
  • Keeping equipment and tools in good order/repair
  • Monitoring gates and fences
B Horticulture
  • Monitoring plant health in garden and park, flagging problems and applying appropriate treatments
  • Cultivating herbaceous borders to the expected standard
  • Choosing, ordering, and planting of annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees as appropriate
  • Sourcing and ordering of plant supplies (fertilizer, pesticides, etc.) as required
  • Growing of vegetables, flowers and herbs from seeds and tender perennials from cuttings
  • Maintaining/pruning trees, hedges, and shrubs
  • Liaising with and supervising tree surgeons
  • Cultivating lawns and parkland meadows, instructing mowing contractor
  • Controlling weeds in borders (based on organic agents where possible)
  • Controlling pests and liaising with pest control contractor
  • Garden irrigation (largely automated, see below)
  • Managing garden and leaf compost
  • Managing leaves
Any other duty reasonably required by AO in relation to horticultureC Garden buildings, Paths, Pond, machinery and tools
  • Sweeping garden paths after border work
  • Monitoring water quality and weed control in ponds and fountain
  • Ensuring that garden tools are clean and functional.
  • Any other duty reasonably required by AO in relation to garden buildings, paths, ponds, machinery, and tools.
  • Ensuring that garden machinery is in good state of repair, maintained and serviced as necessary.
D Automatic and Manual Irrigationto implement
  • Ensuring that sprinkler position and output is adapted to changes in vegetation
  • Programming of irrigation system according to water requirements
  • Compiling a list of plants which need special attention and monitoring throughout the season
  • Any other duty reasonably required by AO in relation to irrigation.
E Supervision of StaffThe Head Gardener instructs and supervises the gardeners and volunteers (if any) in all horticultural duties, including
  • Clipping and pruning of hedges, trees, and shrubs
  • Automated and manual watering
  • General horticulture and planting
  • Weed and pest control
  • Edge cutting of lawns
  • Maintenance of water features
F Finance and BudgetsThe Head Gardener is accountable for the expenditure on routine garden supplies and the lawn mowing contractor within the remit of the budget agreed with the Employer at the beginning of the year. This includes the
  • Monthly reconciling of garden supply expense from invoices and credit card statement against budget
  • Monitoring of monthly hours spent on lawn mowing against the agreed target
  • Negotiation of discounts with suppliers wherever possible
Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent, NCH, HND, OND, City & Guilds, Kew or Edinburgh Diploma in Horticulture, RHS level 2, RHS Level 3, MHort RHS.
  • Practical experience with tractors and their attachment
  • NPTC PA1/PA6 Knapsack Spraying
  • NPTC Brush Cutting/Clearing Saw (desirable)
  • NPTC Level 2 Chain Saw Maintenance & Cross Cutting (desirable)
  • A proven track record of high-quality horticultural work.
  • People management and communication skills with proven experience.
  • Ability to manage garden expense budgets
  • Thorough understanding of relevant Health and Safety levels
