Job Description

Laboratory Technician /Materials Testing, Product Development, Quality Control & ComplianceLocation: Loughborough, LW11 5TWOffice / Laboratory basedReporting to: Laboratory ManagerRoles & Responsibilities

  1. Quality Control
  • Undertake routine QC/Batch testing on all manufactured powdered products and in-house tinted products.
  • Logging of samples, calculation/recording of test results and communication of test results to the Works department.
  • Identification of materials that are out-of-specification and processing them using Non Conformance Reports, Work-away instructions, etc. as directed by the Laboratory Manager.
  • Assist the Laboratory Manager in the development of new quality control processes/procedures as may be necessary from time to time.
  1. Laboratory / work areas
  • Ensure that good housekeeping of the Laboratory facilities is maintained and that the working areas are in a suitably safe, clean and tidy condition at all times.
  • Ensure that laboratory management/QC Control & Compliance processes are undertaken in accordance with the Companys documented procedures.
  • Ensure laboratory testing equipment/instruments are maintained in an appropriately calibrated condition: Liaise with external Calibration test houses as necessary.
  • Report all accidents and near-misses in accordance with company policy.
  1. Product Development
  • Assist the Laboratory Manager as directed in relation to refinement of existing product formulations and in the development of new products or processes.
  • Assist the Laboratory Manager with sample preparation and testing/assessment (in-house and externally with third parties) of new and existing products.
  • Assist the Laboratory Manager in the development of test procedures as may be necessary from time to time.
  1. Compliance / Certification
  • Assist the Laboratory Manager in ensuring that products/systems are tested and assessed appropriately by recognised test houses, Technical Approval Bodies (e.g. BBA, BRE), etc.
  • Assist with preparations for annual BRE FPC (Factory Production Control) Audits and other inspections/audits by external bodies as necessary.
  • Maintain detailed records of all correspondence, testing reporting, evaluations, etc., necessary in support of product compliance and/or third party certification and the requirements of BRE, etc.
  • Keep abreast of relevant changes to legislation, technical developments/trends in the building and associated industries that may have an impact on the business or on product compliance.
  1. Health & Safety Data
  • Assist the Laboratory Manager to ensure that COSHH Health & Safety Data Sheets/ Material Safety Data Sheets are maintained in an up-to-date condition and are compliant with current mandatory requirements. Liaise with Suppliers and Consultants as necessary.
Personal Characteristics and Skills:
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft packages (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Sound working knowledge of Health and Safety in the workplace
  • Demonstrate ability to manage project activity on time and to budget.
  • Confidence to develop good relationships with clients, colleagues and external bodies.
  • Willing to undertake any necessary training and development
