Job Description

Job Title: Chemist (Technician)Location: Loughborough, UKPackage: Competitive salary + pension, private healthcare, life assurance, cycle to work scheme and moreOverview:Plastic Energy is at the forefront of converting non-recyclable "End-of-Life" plastics into high grade oils for making clean recycled plastics, or alternative low-carbon fuels. Our company mission is to play a significant role in solving the global plastic problem, and to be world leaders in chemical recycling.We are continuously looking to develop our pioneering technology to meet the high demands of environmental regulation and the changing attitudes towards the value of waste. Given the intense interest in our technology, we are strengthening our Research and Development team based within the Department of Chemistry at Loughborough University, to help bolster our growing business.We are seeking a technically minded Chemist (Technician) who will report to the Principal Scientist and work alongside our existing Chemists. The position holder will develop their practical skills and knowledge, working on both synthetic and analytical research projects in the area of converting waste plastic into oil.For a candidate who advocates sustainability and would enjoy having meaningful input into an emerging sector, this is an exciting opportunity.Role and ResponsibilitiesYou will:

  • Develop an understanding within the area of end-of-life plastic waste pyrolysis and related waste management.
  • Carry out pyrolysis experiments on the laboratory / pilot scale and characterise the resulting products.
  • Analyse the resulting data and interpret the results.
  • Support, and after training, be responsible for, the day-to-day running of individual research projects.
  • Work to, and implement, health and safety regulations with respect to work undertaken.
  • Prepare reports and communicate research findings.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating product characterisation databases.
  • Take a collaborative approach, contributing new ideas for new research and enterprise projects.
  • Assist in the continued technical development and roll-out of Plastic Energy’s technology on a global scale. This may occasionally involve international travel and collaboration with other stakeholders.
  • Undertake other duties as may be reasonably requested and that are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.
  • Person SpecificationEssential:
  • A degree-level qualification in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Material Science, or relevant industrial experience.
  • Experience of working within a synthetic or analytical laboratory setting.
  • Knowledge of GC-MS operation and related data processing.
  • Enthusiasm and aptitude to be part of a growing team, and eager to expand practical and theoretical knowledge.
  • The ability to progress with several different tasks simultaneously and deliver to schedule.
  • Excellent maths and IT skills.
  • An effective communicator with an excellent standard of oral and written English.
  • Sense of adventure and drive, and a self-motivator.
  • Background and/or interest in alternative energy technology.
  • Ability to travel if required.
  • Desirable:
  • Experience of working with air sensitive materials and / or high temperature reactions.
  • Knowledge of, or familiarity with, Swagelok compression fittings and/or operation of an autoclave.
