Job Description

Lead Technical Architect (data infrastructure & systems)Salary range: £70-80,000Location: Picadilly Circus or Stratford (with home working)Full timePlesae note that CRUK are not the employer for this role. All candidates will be reviewed by the EDDRP UK hiring team.The role of Lead Technical Architect is an exciting opportunity for an experienced technical architect to join a small team designing and building the data infrastructure and systems to power one of the worlds largest long-term population health studies. The role will suit someone who has designed and scaled multiple online services and has an in-depth understanding of technology stacks and the modern set of frameworks, tools and services.The environment will be mixed, with external technology suppliers, licensed software as well as from-scratch software development. You will be joining a greenfield project, in at the start, working out how all the pieces fit together.You will be a key member of the team who will prototype, innovate and solve challenging issues of scale and performance reach and accessibility across a broad spectrum of society. You will help us to design a system which enables complex data linkage and coding, strict privacy and security requirements, and the development of large and varied datasets including genomics.The work will involve design and architecture, working with a multidisciplinary in-house team, experimentation, analysis and investigation of new tools and technologies, serving the needs of both the study participants and researchers from industry, charities and academia.Key Responsibilities

  • You will lead the infrastructure design of a platform which will power a large-scale population health research study
  • You will collaborate with colleagues to develop plans related to the data architecture, data flows, scaling and functionality of the services
  • Working alongside the director of technology you will develop plans with internal and external stakeholders to enable complex data linkage and coding, strict privacy and security requirements, and the storage and access of large and varied datasets including genomics
  • You will join a team which will prototype, innovate and solve challenging issues of scale and performance, reach and accessibility
  • You will be responsible for maintaining great relations with outsourced teams and suppliers
  • You will work with a smaller multidisciplinary in-house team on experimentation, analysis and investigation of new tools and technologies, serving the needs of both the participants and users in the study and the researchers working with the data.
  • Key Technical Skills, Knowledge, Experience and BehavioursThe role will be varied and evolve over time, so a breadth of expertise is essential.
  • Experience in the design and deployment of complex data schemas and flows
  • Familiarity with a variety of database, data warehouse and big data systems: NoSQL, SQL, graph, column stores and so on
  • Working with high availability live systems on at least two of AWS, GCP, Azure
  • Hands-on experience with devops automation / infrastructure-as-code toolsets such as Docker, Terraform, Ansible, Kubernetes
  • Experience with cybersecurity principles, secure by design patterns
  • Strong understanding of information governance, regulation and compliance
  • Comfortable with API design and architectural styles such as REST, GraphQL, oAuth, and architectural patterns such as microservices, serverless, federated systems
  • Working in an agile methodology; used to code reviews and pairing
  • Domain expertise with large-scale consumer web and mobile services
  • Experience in software engineering across a variety of languages and frameworks
  • Experience designing for scale and troubleshooting scaling and performance problems; good understanding of technology stacks from networks up to applications
  • Excellent communicator in person, in writing, when presenting, when creating diagrams, specifications and documentation
  • In addition, any of these would be helpful:
  • Experience with health data (could be clinical data, wearables, consumer apps, genomics, etc) or relevant standards such as FHIR, ICD-10, SNOMED-CT.
  • Experience with machine learning and data science environments, MLOps tools
  • Experience working in a regulated environment with standards such as ISO27001, CyberEssentials, NHS DSPT
