Job Description

Job Title: Communication Support WorkerLocation: Merseyside (various locations)Salary: £20+ per hourContract: rest of the academic yearReed Further Education are recruiting Communication Support worker in Merseyside, full or part time for the rest of the academic year.Role Overview:As a Communication Support Worker, you will play a vital role in ensuring that deaf students have equal access to education. Your primary responsibility is to facilitate effective communication between students, teachers, and peers. You’lluse various methods to adapt learning materials and provide personalized support to meet individual needs.Key Responsibilities:

  1. Communication Assistance:
    • Work closely with deaf students in educational settings (colleges, universities, or schools).
    • Use different communication methods tailored to each learner, including:
      • British Sign Language (BSL): Facilitate communication using BSL.
      • Clear Speech: Ensure clarity in spoken communication.
      • Notetaking: Assist students by taking notes during lectures or discussions.
    • Adapt your approach based on the student’s preferences and requirements.
  1. Inclusive Learning:
    • Collaborate with teaching staff to create an inclusive classroom environment.
    • Modify learning materials (e.g., worksheets, presentations) to suit individual needs.
    • Support students during class activities, exams, and assessments.
  2. Record Keeping:
    • Maintain accurate records of student progress and interventions.
    • Document communication strategies used and their effectiveness.
  3. Advocacy and Empowerment:
    • Empower students to advocate for their needs.
    • Encourage independence and self-confidence.
    • Promote a positive and supportive atmosphere.
Successful applicants will have the following skills and qualifications:
  • Experience working with students/young adults in either a high school setting, college setting or support and care setting.
  • Experience with signing, using BSL
  • A good understanding and commitment to Safeguarding
  • British Sign Language from Level 3 minimum
  • A minimum of GCSE A-C/Level 2 in English and Maths.
  • An Enhanced DBS on the update service or the willingness to obtain one.
