Job Description

A growing diagnostic company has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Upstream Processing Scientist to join its team. You will be a scientific lead in tasks and projects in Process Development and Technical Transfer (focused on Contract Development/Manufacture). You will have significant experience in microbial fermentation projects within another GMP manufacturing environment.ResponsibilitiesMay include some or all of the following:

  • Collaboratively engage with colleagues in a small team of Scientists and Technicians for rapid and efficient project progress, delivering an exceptional quality of data and scientific support to our customers. This may include writing of time-critical reports and directly interacting with customers.
  • Work under the overall project plans, adhering as closely to project timelines and work input goals as technical progress allows.
  • Make a significant contribution of your time (target 80% overall) to working hands-on in the laboratory and dealing with primary data. In the Upstream Team, covering the set-up and running of fermentations will require out of hours working.
  • As determined by the Director, R&D, and R&D Team Leaders, also contribute time to working on Downstream or Analytical tasks if project plans require this.
  • Assist in development of detailed workflows in the subject matter area, highlighting standard work operations and the time/resource that each should take as the basis for R&D capacity planning.
  • Contribute to preparation of Lab Process Outlines and interact with Process Transfer function to prepare Scale-Up Process Outlines.
  • Prepare highly time-critical project reports in different formats for use in client discussions and closing of agreed project stage milestones.
  • Support the development of R&Ds technical platform capabilities within the Upstream subject matter area.
  • Fully support and comply with R&D laboratory working practices with a particular focus in the Upstream laboratory, contribute fully to all communal lab responsibilities, setting a leading example to other staff.
  • Education / Experience:
  • BSc in a relevant scientific discipline and extensive relevant scientific and/or manufacturing experience.
  • Higher degrees are advantageous, if accompanied by relevant scientific and/or manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with cloning and optimization of protein expression from a variety of recombinant coli systems is essential. Experience with recombinant yeast such as Pichia would be an advantage.
  • Experience of developing Upstream Process Design Space and delivering Contract Development/Manufacture projects within a fermentation-based cGMP Bio-Pharmaceutical organization would be an advantage.
