Job Description

Summary The voice of our landscapes, conservation champions and lovers of all things outdoors, youll help to keep the British countryside and coast wonderful. Working in some of the nations most stunning places and spaces, come rain or shine, your love of theoutdoors will inspire others as you strive to ensure that landscapes are beautifully presented and continue to take our visitors breath away.Accommodation is provided to the postholder for the proper or better performance of his or her duties in accordance with Trust criteria and HMRC rules.Interviews for this role will be held on 6th December. What its like to work here This wonderful green oasis consists of 136 hectares of ancient woodland and farmland criss-crossed with footpaths and bridleways, situated just 11 miles from Trafalgar Square. It is an exceptionally important area for connecting people with nature in a highlypopulated area of Southeast London.The woodland is managed through traditional methods of thinning and coppicing, supports a diverse range wildlife and is a significant facility for our local community.The farm recently came back into the Trusts direct management, and we are taking this opportunity to explore ways to sustain and best represent this key historic site so close to central London.We are now looking for an experienced Ranger with energy and enthusiasm to join our Ightham Mote and North Kent Team improving habitats and increasing visitors access to all our outdoor sites, focussing on our outdoors strategy at Petts Wood and Hawkwood.This is a significant opportunity to engage supporters and key stakeholders in our work alongside present and future volunteers, together with our local advisory committee and other partners, to continue and extend our strategy of Growing Support and makingEveryone Welcome and to build upon the excellent and innovative work to date.Petts Wood and Hawkwood is managed as part of the Ightham Mote, and North Kent portfolio and whilst primarily based at this site, the successful candidate will also work across all our sites including Ightham Mote, Oldbury Hill, Cobham Woods and One TreeHill, as required. What youll be doing As the Area Ranger youll manage a team of Volunteers. Youll support your fellow Rangers and the wider portfolio team in undertaking engagement and conservation work, contributing towards HLS (Higher Level Stewardship) targets.Youll play a key role in maintaining excellent standards of presentation and property maintenance, successfully achieving Conservation Performance Indicator targets. Youll build and maintain strong professional relationships with colleagues, contractors,tenants, and neighbouring land managers.Youll also be responsible for helping with excellent communication of our conservation work to a wide range of audiences, both new and existing, through events, guided walks, and engagement with local communities. Youll appreciate the need for our countrysidesites to bring in income, so your business ideas will play an important part in the teams success.Please also read the full role profile attached to this advert.   • Have practical experience of countryside/rural skills
  • Have evidence of good people management and leadership
  • Have good communication skills including public presentation
  • Have strong organisational skills including work programming
  • Have a proven track record of managing and leading on health and safety and environmental compliance
  • Have a full UK Driving licence
  • Be able to manage contractors and small projects, including budgets.
And youll need to demonstrate the following experience on your CV/Application;
  • Diploma/NVQ3 or higher in countryside or environmental conservation
  • Have good wildlife identification skills
  • Habitat and species surveying experience
  • Empathy with, and significant experience of, working with volunteers
