Job Description

TEAM LEADER 18+JOB DESCRIPTIONOverview of the National Citizen Service (NCS)NCS is a national programme that brings together young people from different backgrounds, builds their confidence, and challenges them to make a difference in their local community.It is a voluntary programme for all 16 and 17-year-olds that will promote:

  • a more cohesive society by mixing participants of different backgrounds.
  • a more responsible society by supporting the transition into adulthood for young people.
  • a more engaged society by enabling young people to work together to create social action projects in their local communities.
  • Find out more: Team Leader RoleWe are looking for Team Leaders aged 18+ to manage, inspire and develop a diverse group of 16 participants, aged between 16 and 17, throughout the NCS experience. The programmes take place during the summer and run for 2 and 3 weeks, you are able to apply to work on more than one wave. Team Leaders will support and lead the Team Assistants. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with young people while being supported by a passionate team.Responsibilities of the postThe Team Leader will:
  • Inspire and motivate participants to remain fully committed throughout the NCS programme.
  • Facilitate the set curriculum and prepare as needed.
  • Be a positive role model at all times.
  • Provide pastoral care, guided reflection and discipline of young people, especially those within their team.
  • Supervise young people on coach journeys.
  • Work alongside, guide and support other staff allocated to their team.
  • Ensure the participants remain safe and adhere to health and safety guidelines throughout the programme and during their social action project phase.
  • Ensure continued attendance and commitment of team members via text or phone calls prior to commencement of each session.
  • Live with and support participants in residential activities in the residential aspects of the programme. This will include supervision of evening activities and dorms.
  • Complete all administrative paperwork relating to the programme to set deadlines.
  • Liaise regularly with line managers to keep them informed of any issues and progress.
  • Undertake monitoring and evaluation as required.
  • Provide support and maintain regular contact with young people during social action project planning and delivery including meeting face-to-face.
  • Work within the boundaries and guidelines of Hear2Listen as a whole.
  • To carry out duties within the scope and spirit of the programme, in line with Reed in Partnership and NCS policies, procedures and practices.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the following skills and characteristics: Essential:
  • Experience of managing and motivating young people.
  • Belief in young people and in helping them to take a more active role in their communities.
  • Experience working directly with teams of young people (either in voluntary or paid capacity), including some with challenging behaviour.
  • Rapport and empathy with young people
  • Experience of facilitating small group discussions and reflecting on learning.
  • Passion and interest in building stronger communities and influencing societal change.
  • Interested in young people’s personal development.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Beneficial:
  • Success in managing and motivating people in challenging environments
  • Experience of working in partnership with youth or diverse community organisations
  • Experience in a residential youth environment (e.g., youth camp, scout camp, boarding school etc.)
  • Experience of NCS programme.
  • Basic knowledge of safeguarding, health and safety and data protection
  • Provide admin support, keeping records and handling sensitive data.
  • Full driving license
