Job Description

A fantastic opportunity to join an established University as a Research Excellence Manager. You will provide expert advice, project management and oversight of preparatory work for the next REF exercise and its final submission from the University.Client DetailsThe Research & Enterprise directorate has been a key part of the Universitys mission since it was founded. We support our researchers in working together to achieve research excellence and impact, helping to deliver the Universitys vision of a fairer,brighter and carbon neutral future. A vision that aims to significantly increase our level of research and Knowledge Exchange (KE) related activities, outputs and impact as part of an ambitious strategic plan.We support and facilitate high-quality academic research and KE through strategy and policy development, working closely with our academic community. The team support our researchers to achieve excellence in their research and to maximise impact and KE.We also support academics to access funding, form new collaborations and partnerships, to consider, develop and implement procedures for intellectual property (IP) and the technology transfer and commercialisation of research outcomes.We aim to maximise the impact of publicly or privately funded research on society; to maximise our exposure and income through enterprise activities; to advise on policy, compliance, and contracting processes and procedures; and to manage our Research ExcellenceFramework (REF) and Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) returns. The Research and Enterprise team also manage the research and KE information systems essential to support, manage and report on research and KE activities across the University.Description

  1. Provide expert advice, project management and oversight of preparatory work for the next REF exercise and its final submission. This will include devising strategies that promote and enable research excellence, as well as developing and managing the cycleof regular school research quality review exercises including information regarding outputs, impact and environment.
  2. Establish internal processes, procedures, codes of practice, and policies for all aspects of continuing improvement of the UoH research excellence as well as any future REF submissions and ensure these are followed.
  3. Evaluate previous research assessment exercises and benchmark against competitor Research Organisations, to identify and take forward ways of improving institutional performance in future research assessments.
  4. Work in partnership with and provide expert advice to, senior academic leaders (including the University Research Committee) and the REF Steering Group, on increasing the quality, visibility and influence of the Universitys research and its impact, aswell as enable the development of a high-quality body of research outputs and impacts for submission to future research assessment exercises. Advise on interdisciplinary approaches that will contribute to excellence, particularly in alignment with the REF.
  5. Supporting the Director of Research & Innovation, the Associate PCV for Research Culture and Researcher Development and the Head of REGI with the management of the Universitys Quality-related Research (QR) investment plan and budget, ensuring that investmentis supporting the delivery of excellent research and strengthening the Universitys research environment and culture.
  6. Contribute to the development and implementation of the Universitys long-term plan to increase the sustainability and vitality of the research environment so that it enables research excellence.
  7. Monitor research KPIs and other metrics and make recommendations on how performance could be improved to meet the aspiration of research excellence.
  8. In collaboration with academic colleagues, develop a shared awareness of research excellence by discipline and embed this understanding across the University.
  9. Lead the implementation and evaluation work for the open and responsible use of research metrics, including embedding the principles of the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).
  10. Develop an excellent understanding of the data held in the Universitys research information systems and know how to work with it. Comply with the associated data protection information security, information management and information technology regulations,policies, processes and procedures.
  11. Engage with the R&I Systems Team as well as the providers of our research information system and its wider user community in the development and use of its REF module.
  12. Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of external RE developments and good practice by engaging with external bodies, colleagues at other universities, etc
Profile
  • Be experienced professionals who are expected to exercise a significant degree of specialist and independent responsibility
  • Have gained a professional and/or academic qualification and have extensive specialist experience
  • Be involved in planning and ensuring progress within established procedures and clearly defined university policy by providing a high level of specialist advice and expertise to support the Faculty or Departmental activities
  • Contribute to the longer term planning in accordance with the wider University strategy
  • Advise senior University management on policy, functional or service priorities and develop new procedures and polices within existing values
  • Have responsibility for a service/function and will include managing team(s), monitoring progress and taking appropriate action to ensure the goals and objectives are met.
Job Offer- Salary up to £52,800- Excellent pension- Excellent holidays up to 32 days per annum- flexible working patterns- hybrid working (ideally a few days per week on site in Hull with the rest home working)
